Running Boards

So I have an opportunity to get some running boards from a guy up in Winnipeg for $225. He's parting out his X. Is there anything else I need besides the running boards?

I think you need the wheel arches too (black plastic).

tmv 07-04-2016 08:35 PM

^Correct. You need all the wheels arches along with the aluminum running board. Real OEM has different part number for them; with and without running board.

Is he by chance willing to part out other parts as well, would you be able to know? I need to replace mine, part number 51137170840. the trunk lid grip

Do you think I can contact the seller too?

RFaber 07-05-2016 12:11 AM

yes, you'll need the running boards, the four wheel arch's, and the lower plastic covers for the running boards, there are a series of clips too, they are cheap new, but if you can save the old ones, better for ya!! you will also need a few 'body rivets' that hold the arches to the body. they are sort of a one time use part! (and cheap too!!)
it took me about an hour to do both sides of mine, I pulled out each and every rubber plug too and cleaned them along with the running boards and the arches. I think there is a FAQ in the how to section.
good luck.

Ricky Bobby 07-05-2016 10:01 AM

You may need a new front right wheel arch to go with those boards - it looks damaged in the picture of the smashed X - but everyone is right, 2 lower panels that run along the bottom, 4 wheel arches, 2 aluminum RB's, and 2 long thin sections that cover the top mounting bolts -

I just went through this myself getting a used set, I was missing the right side lower sill which I got from a seller on Ebay from the UK ($120) - the wheel arches should be around $140 apiece I believe

Just to help you out here is the hardware you need to fit them (I paid about $50 for all from dealer)

07 11 9 915 093 -- HEX BOLT WITH WASHER ----- 18
51 11 1 944 537 -- EXPANDING RIVET ---------- 20
51 71 7 002 953 -- BLIND RIVET -------------- 26
51 71 8 267 301 -- CLIP --------------------- 4

I believe the #7301 CLIP only comes in Qty 10 packs so I had to buy a 10 pack, and one of the types of rivets as well - so I had to buy a few extra clips and rivets but I paid $50 for all hardware

Hope that helps

RB, you got some boards! Used but OE at least.

80stech 07-05-2016 09:08 PM

I'm actually thinking of taking my running boards off and might be interested in the no-running-board parts! :)

Do running boards help side of truck paint chips? Isn't that the point in having them?

I think they're designed to assist entry and exit, although they may also reduce the amount of road dirt that splashes up from the front wheels.

I know finally right! :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

I'm picking up my remaining pieces on Saturday morning, then going to deep clean and remove all the nubs and deep clean and dress the plastic trims so they look brand new - I got a pretty sick deal on 90% of the set from a guy parting his X out in RI, thankfully we have awesome members here and a local member picked them up, and his daughter lives 15 mins from me so I waited until she was visiting him over the 4th and she was kind enough to transport my parts back to Jersey

Even with sourcing my missing piece and the hardware to fit them, I am under $425 for the complete set ($1050 from the dealer for new OE) so I kept myself under budget

Pics coming soon!

Not sure if anyone wants the black boards/trims, I'll probably junk them.

RB finally getting his board! the long wait is almost done ! ;)
Don't forget pics, please!

Out of curiosity, are there any rust spots on the aluminum part of the board, RB? Do you by chance have a pic of the board?
I ask because I have a (very) small and slight rust spot on one of my running board and was trying to find a way to get rid of it.
There are posts on here on how to clean it, ie. removing the black dots and and metal polish..but will that remove the rust spot?

Glad you asked - you need an iron removing product to dissolve the rust and not damage the aluminum -

Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner, Adam's Wheel Cleaner, CarPro IronX should all work great - you spray them on and they will dissolve the iron particles on the surface and it will turn purple, a slight agitation and then you can rinse off and should be clean as can be! Then maybe a bit of light metal polish to clean up any remaining oxidation

Also, the "nubs" pop out pretty easy from all I've read and aren't easily damaged or broken

Thank you again. Will definitely put this on my list of to-do's for the car.
Was just wary about if I had to sand it, but then I knew that would damage the aluminum.

Thanks again for all your help! still loving my AEs, i get all :wow: whenever I walk away from the car and see (Angel) Eyes! :D

^^They look gorgeous!

TiAgX5 07-06-2016 12:10 PM

Congrats RB.

Long search but finally happened.

I would retain the original parts, next owner might not want the running boards. Stock pcs will help sale.

Thanks for that tidbit of info. Definitely will throughly inspect them when I pick them up. Seems like a good impulse buy for 225$ CAD lol. Not in a rush to put them on. Wanted to have a pair in my possession for when the time comes.

Now with the additional parts I was looking into installing the 4.6is or 4.8is bodykit from ProTuning.lv. I see they come with the arches set. Is there a difference for those sets with or without running boards? If not then i'll just wait to buy the kit and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Yep I have that and will reference it - btw this is the tool you need for the blind rivets and plastic wheel well rivets

Hand Riveter with 40 Industrial Strength Poly Rivets

RFaber 07-11-2016 12:57 PM

Ive got a set of the 'no running board' stuff. if anyone needs them! also, while youre coming up north, you might as well get yourself some maple syrup too :) lol, and bring along a tennis racket, I hear the mosquitoes are quite bad this time of year! lol!!!

80stech 07-11-2016 07:32 PM

RFaber, I might be interested in your no-running-board parts. My X5 is an 02/2004 so it's a facelift and I wonder if the parts are the same? Yours being a sport package are the skirts gloss black? I'll try to check into it a bit and maybe PM you if it looks like it will work. Maybe start a new thread and tell us about your subwoofer install, I was just thinking of doing that myself as well! Cheers :)

I was looking for a tool like this and it delayed my install by a day. I was telling my buddy who owns a shop that I was looking for the tool and he says..

Yeah. We have one of those. We call it pliers. :banghead:

20 mins later, my rivets were installed and I was going for a drive. All you need to do is push the trim toward the body around the rivet while holding the plastic pin with the pliers. when it 'catches' on the indents, just twist or pull the plastic tip and it'll break very easily. Voila. Riveting! :p:
