4.8IS left front knock under breaking.
Hello all. I recently purchased an X5 from a user on this site. I purchased it with a slight knock "sounded like a worn out bushing" while breaking. Also while turning at slow speeds.
I jacked the front end up and tried to check all the bushings I could within reach and steering linkages. All the bushings feel soft and the movement is dampened. Is there something else I could Look into easily. I mean without lifting the car up? Do the ball joints cause a knock on acceleration and deceleration? Could this be an axle issue? Receipts show relatively new bushings and front air suspension. 2005 4.8is X5 My apologies on using the word "KNOCK", its the best descriptive word I could think about. Also, Happy to be a new user here, 1st Post! -G |
Well, as you say, a knock could mean a million things. I had a knock or clunk sound, ended up doing all the front suspension arms, ARB bushes and joints. What I found was the bolts on my stiffner plate (one with inspection holes for oil) where loose. Not falling out loose but they would turn with a spanner and a light push. So tightened those bad boys up and then a new knock appeared, that was a loose front right brake disc so tightened the disc nut. Its silent as a church mouse now.
Hope that helps. |
Yep,
That is the right approach. Tighten and test everything that could knock before replacing anything. As you were not there when the work was done so assume something was left undone or something is now loose from a "torqued spec" setting. Double check the front strut bushings as many are installed incorrectly allowing premature wear rates and failures...like 5K! :wow: |
Thanks for the input, I will look into the tips.
I will follow up and let you know how it goes. -Justin |
