got the control arm (thrust arm) off. Now if I can get the axel out....

Everything's off, except the axle in the diff.

So, here's the mystery box. It had 2 screws attached the top of it, and a push grommet in the front right behind the plastic grille mesh just above the bumper.

I had to reach through the mesh and remove the grommet, remove a few screws in the wheel well to push the trim out of the way, then take the 2 screw out. Once out, I could push it up and out of the way.

There was no way a socket plus wrench could fit on the bolt with that in the way.

This is driver's side, right by the upper bolt on the frame for the thrust bar.

Once again, the pic didn't post, but is my gallery under axle nut.

As mentioned, box is the air duct to cool the alt. There's a temp sensor inside it.

The axle pops out of the diff with a couple of whacks on the tripod joint flange; the largish boxy looking thing. Consider replacing the axle seal on the side of the transfer case.

x2 - I wouldn't re-use the seal

I had a pry bar with a slight curve in it that flexing, and was therefore useless. Went and got a new, and it came right out.

I only finished the driver's side yesterday, and the passenger side will have to wait until next weekend.

I replaced the thrust arm, ball joint, cv axle, and seal. Now that I have all of the trial error, and runs to the parts/hardware store out of the way, taking the other side apart should be much easier. I've read some threads on reinstalling the passenger side axle - that looks to be the most difficult part.

Sorry, that should have said "seal on the side of the front diff". Too early, need more coffee. Same seal on the other side, but that one fits into a support.

Gosh, I had not realized how the axle boots being worn out, in conjunction with the thrust arm bushings, had degraded ride quality.

Got both sides done, and it rides and quiet, and feels great.

I wish I hadn't put this off for so long now.
