Black smoke and loud banging from engine is my x5 dead?

Set of driving today and car suddenly made a large knocking noise from engine followed by black smoke out of engine. Is it dead ?

Cars run fine for last two years no engine issues at all. No loss of power. Car is 3.0d e53 on 02 plate.

Car still starts and runs but loud noise so turned it straight off. Sounds like noise coming from engine

Oh it's a diesel. Not going to find a lot of help from this side of the pond since diesel X5s for this model wasn't sold here.

Was the engine running rough when this happened? Might be able to help if you record and post the sound but depending on where the sound is coming from it could make things worse. Any symptoms prior to this happening?

I've had car recovered. Engine was running sweet prior to this. No power loss no signs of problem with the exception of the light rattle when idle in drive when car is stationary. Here's the odd thing. I've had it recovered back to my house. Started it up to steer it onto the drive and no noise. No smoke ??? What is going on ? Dare to take it anywhere now incase it happens again and costs me a second recovery

Black smoke and lots of loud banging? Sounds like a heck of a party under your hood man!

But seriously, dont keep running it to find out the problem post mortem. If it suddenly was normal after a bit like you say, it may be salvageable.

As mentioned, read the codes, something like that would probably leave a few.

Have you looked under the hood and underneath? Anything off visually? How are the fluids? Still level and normal color and consistency?
