Screwed up my axle joint threads
While doing a boot replacement on my drivers side front outer boot, I managed to bang up the threads on the joint. Took several blows with two sledges to get the thing out of the hub.
called around and couldn't find a machine shop that has the capability to re-thread this bad boy. Just the first few threads are messed up, the remaing 75% is still good. Any advice to re-thread? apparently this is a M27x1.75, correct? would like to fix this issue, but buying a new cv joint is not out of the question. any thoughts? |
How bad are the threads?
|
outermost 2-3 threads are messed up. the rest is good.
looks like the sledge blows compressed the starting thread. |
not sure if I need a thread chaser, or a thread file.
|
Can you crank out the threads to ghetto re-tap using the old axle nut? This is why i use a puller to pull the axle back through the hub instead of banging on the stub lol
|
not sure how to ghetto re-tap. any advice?
gonna order a thread file in 1.75 and get to work. learned my lesson, and the other side was done in 30min. now I'm stuck with a fresh booted side, and a no-go on the other side. |
The lesson learn is to put back on the nut before hitting the axle with a sledgehammer.
|
If it is just the first thread or two, you can get a dremel and dremel the thread down so the nut can go back on the axle.

this job could've been done by now. funny thing is, I kept reading that the nut should be left on when pounding the axle out. |

Fir future readers, once the nut is loosened, leave it flush with the end of the axle before using a hammer.
Better to use a gear puller to push the axle inward. |

I give the thread/nut/spline area a light spray of PB Blaster during each tire rotation (7.5k miles). This is a preventive maintenance step to make removal easier.
Also, reassemble with a light coat of Weicon or copper base anti-seize on the spline (keeps moisture out). |
success!
took a thread file to it for about an hour and after running the axle nut on and off a few times, it seems that we're back in business. lesson learned. for those who F$%K this up, the joint has an M27x1.5 thread. |
