Relocating NAV unit after installing Eonon - is it possible?

Hi Guys,

I've been taking a break from working on the X for the past couple of months...got a Volvo to use daily so the X can get a much deserved rest.

I want to slowly get back into working on some of the issues and thought I'd start with this one: Is it possible to move the OEM Nav Unit to the back after installing aftermarket unit? I know it's possible to do so with the MID (to glove box or back) but after searching for a while I see no one has mentioned if the same can be done to the Nav Unit.

The reason I want to do this is because of the Auxiliary function that I need to access. I don't care much for the other functions.

Thanks in advance gents.

I cant see why not?

Physical size and location is the only concern I can imagine right now.

I havent done it though so i'd be interested to know as well.

I'm thinking the same, especially when the original harness is not being used anymore...it's just sitting there behind the new unit.

As for space, I need to investigate if the dvd and cd changer are still important as I don't use them anymore. I'm not sure if the Eonon harness depends on them or not? That would free up plenty of space.

Isnt there some space above the CD changer? I think the nav might fit there?

I had a look and there would have been space over the DVD Nav system if it wasn't for that silver box (which I don't know what it is...?) It has a black and purple cable attached at the top of it, thin and looks like some sort of antenne perhaps....?

The tapatalk app is not allowing me to upload the photo, no matter the format...sorry about that.

I dont think I have and I dont see anything on realoem about it at the moment.

I dont know what it is, but I would think it can be moved. I'm thinking the best place for the nav would be in the area above the changer. You may be able to relocate that silver box. There is a black trim panel under the load floor right at the foot of the left side door that a lot of people have removed to put audio amps, maybe you could move the silver box thingy there?

Going to start work on this today...stay tuned :)

So you are going for it, eh?

Pics or it's not happening! :P

Haha I've taken plenty of pics but can't upload them from the phone. Will do it later tonight when I get some time.

The preliminary verdict is that it Works! First I connected the oem unit upfront (didn't disconnect the eonon) and it came on, everything worked but the sound which is understandable.

The second and most important thing I did was switch off the DSP and set all levels at medium (this was advised in a different thread), it helped the volume on the eonon to stay the same when switching on the car....no need to adjust it every time anymore.

3rd and a little dissapointing point is the relocation of the oem to the back. There is literally no space whatsoever anywhere, the oem unit is a lot bigger than I thought and I'd have to lose the boot side cover if I'm installing it in the metal frame together with the dvd/cd etc. This lead me to try and see if the Eonon will still function if I disconnected the Nav system, cd changer and that weird silver box....and it did. So now I took out the metal frame all together and left a big hole with a super wire/plugs mess. There is enough space now for sure but I don't know yet how to fix the oem in place.

The final and what's probably going to be the most painful task is to pull back the oem wiring from the front....I know i couldn't follow that route when connecting the eonon so I'm worried I might get stuck here.

To be continued....

No need to pull back the oem wiring from the front. Someone relocated the MID to the rear and it worked perfectly. He popped the pins out of the original connector, insulated them and left them behind the ashtray, after noting the colours and position on the connector. Using the now free connector he searched a couple of looms for the corresponding coloured wires at the rear and popped the pins out of the connectors they were on. He then re-inserted the wires/pins into the matching positions on the free connector from the front.
