quick question on trans service

Going to be doing one soon ~97k just wondering how many quarts it'll be? I plan on doing a full service so i'll be dropping the pan and I'm sure not all the fluid will come out. Thanks

going with the ecs tuning kit but if i don't need all 8 quarts i'll buy individual since I also plan on adding Lucas

I believe it took about 6L in my case but I did buy 2 x 5L jugs of Liqui Moly Top Tec 1200 and I'll drain about 4L and refresh it again. I went with ZF Filtran filter kit. If you're doing full exchange flush you'll need more than 6L.

V8 or I6?

I dont remember how much I used in my changes but I always get some left over lol.

no full exchange just the basic service-replacing filter & fluid. 3.0L

ecs's kit comes with 8 quarts so i'm trying to find the proper capacity because if it's less than 8 than i would like to save the money on the 2 quarts.

Does it matter? Aren't they the same transmission? Year is more relevant - LCI (6 speed) or pre-LCI (5 speed).

Wpoll, the V8's have ZF trannys and the I6 gassers have GM.

The I6 gassers have the same tranny from introduction to end of production.

The V8's had 5 speeds at introduction, and got 6-speeds during the facelift.

The GM, 5 speed ZF, and 6 speed ZF all used different fluids.

I think the diesels used ZF's as well.

EDIT: yeah, I'm sure you know all that, just trying to frame the scenario in my mind. Did not see the OP post what model X5. Assuming it is an 03 by the user name though.

Yep - the LCI 3.0d uses the 6HP26X, same as the V8s - I (wrongly) assumed that the 3.0i was the same, i.e. they moved to the ZF 6-speed with the LCI.

I was aware that the GM, ZF 5HP and ZF 6HP all use different fluids.

So all the 3.0i models have the GM 5L40E 5-speed transmission, regardless of year? Huh - who knew...?

I'm edumacated now - thanks! :D

No problem at all Wayne!

Yeah, I had to learn all that when it came time to change fluids. With all the talk of tranny failures on BMW's I dug long and hard to find out what trannys I had and to be sure I was putting in the right stuff lol!

I think we only ever officially got the diesels here in NZ, although I understand that there were a few V8s bought in on special order. I do see a few 3.0i models about (as well as tons of early 4.4i models) but most of them seem to imported as used vehicles, either from Australia or Japan. Makes the 3.0i a bit of a rarity in these parts...

4.8iS Le Mans_NZ on here has the only 4.8iS I know of in NZ, although I'm sure there are probably a few about the place.. Never seen or heard of a 4.6iS here though. :dunno:

O3X5 - unless someone can confirm the EXACT amount you'll need on the drain and refill (inc. filter) you may just need to go with the ECS kit's 8 quarts. I've done 6 or 8 fluid changes on other gearboxes (Aisin-Warner etc. on Toyota's and VWs etc.) and it takes a couple of changes on any given transmission to get a good idea of the exact amount required. I usually ensure I have a litre or two extra on hand, just in case of spills etc. too.

For instance, I can tell you the 01M transmission in a VW Golf Mk.4 takes exactly 3.4 litres on a change (at 35 Deg. C) - nearly every time. Tells you I've done this too much!!
