Help x5 4.8is wont start
So as the title reads my 4.8is wont start. It died not that long ago and i replaced the battery. Started back up stumbled for a few minutes and then made it home np. I drove it around a few short trips by my house to make sure it didnt strand me and sure enough it did. Now ive been trying to work on it in a parking lot less than a mile from my house. Symptoms, car cranks but will not start. At first it would start for maybe 1-2 seconds intermittantly and then die as soon as i gave it gas. Now it wont start at all. I have tried switching the relays, nothing. I jumpered the fuel pump relay and i still heard nothing so i installed new fuel pump. Now i can hear the pump running With the relay jumpered but still nothing. I did get a fuel pressure test gauge but i have not tried that yet. I pulled the out side fuel line from the filter and im getting fuel there. If i had a bad crank position sensor would it fail like this? Whats the best way to check spark on this motor? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Could it be a bad dme? Thanks in advance.

Try reading this, I had the same situation on my 4.8is
IVM Replacement / Troubleshooting - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums I have some more infor to share to. The ISM or IVM is related to the fuel problem, it's easy fix and only $150 |
replace these later after You get it running, I was going to do it my self, it's a PITA and I got a price from BMW to RR new ones for $915 and tax,
How many miles on your 4.8is? I have 108k Good luck ,but these should help. http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...ngine-t258593/ |
Most likely your fuel pump took a dump. Do you hear the fuel pump when you first try to start it. If not your fuel pump is the problem. You can verify this if you don'the you don't want to throw parts at it by connecting a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and turn the key to the run position. You should have a fuEl pressure reading of 50 psi at the gauge.

I have installed a new fuel pump. And a new housing for the pump
Because i broke the nipple on the top of the cylinder when trying to remove the outlet hose. I can verify that the pump is indeed turning on when i jumped the relay but the car will still nof start. Im at work so i dont have time to read the post above yours but ill check it out when i get home. |
On my 4.6is my fuel pressure regulator was bad and caused the same problems. It went out over the summer. I just replaced it and it started the first attempt with no issues. My filter I removed had a date of 11/03 so it was the original.

So the fuel pressure reg is under the hood? Did you troubleshoot the bad one forst or did you just replace it? Im going to have to check the pressure tomorrow when i jump the relay again. I guess the relay is bad as well. Its gotta be something todo with the electronics as i cant hear the pump click on when cer is turned to the first settinf or second but i so when its jumped.
