Best valve stem seals?
 

Hi all, I'm going to do the valve stem seals and I know AGA recommends the Elring seals, but I was told that the Corteco seals are the best you can get.
Anyone know which is best? I don't want to do this again.

I referred to this thread when I did mine.

If I recall (somebody correct me here) Corteco is OEM for the original seals.

Whether the current Corteco seals are significantly superior I could not verify, and for the sake of confidence in the updated design, I went with the Elring set. Gold outer, red inners, I did not think twice.

The factory inners were hard as bricks on half of mine, and the others were close to it.

This was the newest thread I could find on the topic of which valve stem seals to go with on my '06 4.8is. I see that most manufacturers are now making these with red inners/black outer seals. However, I did find this outlier selling out of Germany. These are the only gold outer/red inner option I could find online:

I did search on around on the forum, and other forums...but most of the guidance is around 5yrs old and I hoped someone may have been grappling with this decision more recently and can share some advise of which vss to go with? Thanks!

^I went with those FCP Elring seals... so I hope they are Viton.

I used (well the indy who performed the job) used BMW ones that he bought a local dealer. Gave me the receipt. Part number comes up as N62TU valve stem seal kit.

I searched all over the web and couldn't get a solid answer if elring was superior or if BMW has "revised/updated" their oem supplier as well.

Also supposedly the n63 "green" were better due to the higher heat from the turbos but they eventually tend to leak as well if not sooner than n62s

So I just have up plus it was done already so only time will tell.

I usually don't idle the car for extended periods unless I'm stuck in heavy traffic.

These are the updated new design and are what everyone else seems to be using in all the valve stem seals DIY videos I'd watched- from AgaTools to other DIY youtube videos - and I didn't want to experiment with any other valve stem seals kits including from BMW itself.

Don't forget to get the magnetic valve stem seal installer. It will save you frustrations from using the red plastic installer:

The BMW N62 N73 Valvetronic Spring Tension Tool will also save you hours of frustrations when the spring comes off the intermediate levers.

Thanks for the help. I'm leaning towards the E Euro ones now as a "Made in Germany" claim is worth an extra $12 on this job! Would sure like to give up smoking as a New Year's resolution!

Anyone has any experience with elring? How have they held up over the years for people who've done the job?

I also ordered a 90C thermostat from fcp euro, so hopefully lower engine temperature will prolong their life in the future

I believe you bought the best valve stem seals, yes.

Correct. Safest are to buy or match ones from AGA Tools. These are superior to Genuine.
