Extended spline front Driveshaft
I recently purchased a 2000 X5 4.4. I am replacing the front driveshaft as preventive maintenance, since the original driveshaft had some wear on the splines. My new longer front driveshaft lacks about 1/4" going back in. I have read that the transfer case can be slid back to give enough room. Has anyone on here done this? Can I just loosen the transfer case bolts and slide it back a little or do I need to do a lot more?

Yeah loosen to TC bolts should give you enough slack if it's 1/4"

i´ve just did this to mine and didn´t move anything, just some patience and the driveshaft went in

Thanks for the replies. I will give it another shot before moving anything. I purchased this driveshaft off of Ebay from a guy in California. He says the transfer case does not need to be removed, but that is the extent of what I could get from him.

The driveshaft did go in without loosening anything. I rotated the front diff driveshaft flange and it eventually went in. This driveshaft is about 7/8 of an inch longer than the stock unit. Thanks for the heads up mopri!

That's great - where did you get the driveshaft from, link? It would be great to do this preventatively for some
