Anyone else with cracked trim?

Not too concerned over it but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Mine has fine cracks, too. It's the sun, aging finish, etc., etc. Not planning on replacing.

What's weird is it's only the driver side, only other crack there is is a small one by the door lock button.

I have crack too

Most of my trims are cracked. Still deciding what type of vinyl I want to wrap them with... :(

Most of my wood trims are cracked. Very fine cracks, but there just the same. Not so obvious unless they're in direct sun. Not going to replace.

Mine cracked too ;( drivers side as well.

That's a common issue - not only on the e53 wood trim... Most other BMW I know suffer from this. As sageriders said: it's probably the age, high & low temperatures, tension, ...

I've got the same fine cracks on the drivers side only. Maybe it's from skin contact. I read a thread on refinishing the. As I recall, the owner took it to a wood craftsman who said the cracks were in the polymer finish and not the wood. They could be stripped and refinished, but the veneer is thin so it's a delicate process.

Wow so it is a common issue after all. I'd love to replace it with silver trim or a wrap in the future.

Crack is Wack

Wow, this is a really bad one :wow:

This is odd to me. None of my BMW's suffers cracks.

2000 540 with dark poplar- no cracks in 16 yrs
2002 E46 with dark poplar- no cracks in almost 15 yrs
2004 X5 3.0- sold $ 100k with no cracks after 8 yrs
2004 X5 4.8is with light poplar- no cracks in almost 6 yrs

I am cautious about touching the wood trim, but I don't know if I am *that* cautious? :dunno:

Right, it really looks like shattered glass.

Over 13 yrs /200k miles and no cracks in my trim.

I think drastic temp changes causes the cracking (cold winters/hot summers/non-garaged), and/or pushing on the door trim during opening.

StephenVA 10-27-2016 11:42 AM

I have the driver's door trim cracks. Just a few spider cracks. Nothing like the one shown. Everything else is picture perfect.

Makes sense even though my grandfather garaged it. I'm in NJ so the temp differences throughout the year are huge.
