JL Audio Woofer upgrade

Just wanted to share with everyone. I had a buzzing rear door woofer that needed to be replaced and decided to change out the rear two woofers in my DSP system. Well I searched over and over to find a suitable high quality woofer and landed on the JL Audio C2-600. First of all they are a perfect fit, a true 6"/150mm speaker that will go directly into the BMW X5 speaker housing. Second much improved sound over the original even with the DSP system.

Installation Directions:
- pull out old speaker ( 3 screws)
- Cut speaker wire leads at edge of speaker so that you can solder to new speakers
- Tear out old speaker and the remove speaker frame from X5 speaker housing
- pop in C2-600 woofers
- Using a hot glue gun apply glue to perimeter of speaker and X5 speaker housing
- Solder the speaker wire leads onto the terminals of the C2-600 woofers
- connect speakers to OEM plug and test then re-install

These are the speakers in the door itself? I'm assuming you need to pull the door card first to get at these?

I have a dead one I've been meaning to replace...

Hi Wayne, This is a bit of info I contributed on xdrivers, the speakers are probably readily available from your Supercheap stores.

" I did mine front and rear and the windscreen tweeters. The speakers need to be 160mm, which is NOT 6.5 inches. I used these,(Pioneer 6" Component Speakers TS-G1605C) which came with separate tweeters which I fitted one set in windscreen enclosures. (From Supercheap Auto) My X5 has no DSP, just a speaker in each door plus tweeters mentioned above. The factory tweeter is larger, I just packed some foam to raise the replacement. To be honest, I can't hear a mind blowing improvement, but it was worth the effort. The existing speakers are held in with some sticky double sided tape and pressed into the tubular enclosure, with some force and a large screwdriver as encouragement, they simply push out. I cut the wiring of the existing speakers then soldered short lengths from the new speakers to the plug mounted on the tubular enclosure. Pays to mark the polarity of the original as the plastic enclosures are not stamped + or -. I used a silicon based sealant to fix my speakers back into the tubular enclosure. Simple job, I got away with not removing door trim completely, just levered out the bottom to gain enough space to work. Tweeters are not fixed, just floating behind grill. The grill prises upwards from the cabin side, then flip upwards and out. "

Hope it is of some use if you decide to replace your speaker.

Yes you have to remove the door panel to access the speaker. There was no need for me to provide directions on the door panel removal due to the number of videos and DIYs that exists out there for this procedure.

I'm looking to replace my speakers in my DSP 4.6is. Trying to find some drop in replacements but bavsound discontinued the E53 line. Have you replaced the front speakers?

Yes the JL Audio speakers will fit and operate perfectly as an upgrade. You just have to remove the old speaker driver from the mounts and install the JL Audio woofers in their place. Both the front and rear doors carry the same size driver. By the way they sound better than the BSWs I replaced the two rear drivers one of the BSW ones I had were defective so thats what brought on this modification/upgrade.

Did you replace the tweeters with the JLs too? You're still running the factory amp correct? I would love to meet up and listen to yours in person sometime!!

Yes I replaced the front tweeters in the door with a JL upgrade replacement. I would have to look up the model number but its a substantial upgrade. yes you are correct that I am still running the DSP amp in the vehicle. The only other thing that I changed out is the rear subwoofer where I installed the JL Audio Stealth sub in place of the original. I tapped into the rear sub signal feeds to drive the focal amp dedicated to the sub. I have a from bluetooth unit installed so that I can stream my music from my iPhone through the DSP audio system. Send me a PM with your contact info cell number and email and I will send back my contact info and we can arrange a time to meet up. Maybe at a starbucks location perhaps.

Just did a check on the JL audio tweeter. I used a set of the JL Audio C2-075ct tweeters for the upgrade.

Thanks for checking! I bought these this morning: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Focal is a good brand and they have the same impedance and power handling as the JLs and a little better sensitivity at 92dbs. Also, mostly went with these because I'm impatient and got Amazon same day shipping (gets me every time).
