2006 E53 4.4 V8 with N62 6spd Auto transmission problem
 

Hi all, any help here would be great.
I have recently changed my transmission fluid, that was a bit of a nightmare in itself. I have the bottom fill set up and didn't know this at the time, all the literature I could find showed side fill, anyway I managed to get it filled but it didn't take as much as I was expecting (7litres) took about 4.5litres. I performed the gear shifts allowing oil to be taken up into transmission. Then upon driving, the gears starting slipping and behaving erratic (high revs, holding gears longer than before and general unhappiness; not smooth at all-like before)
I found info on here saying about performing a reset of the EGS Transmission control GS1904 with DISv57, I have DIS and when following the procedure I could not locate said GS1904, only Transmission Control Management- so I performed a reset of this and the car is extremely unhappy now with even wilder erratic gear shifts both up and down.
Anyone have any thoughts as to what damage I have done?
I am to be getting it back up on the ramps tomorrow to check the oil level because I'm a little bit concerned that I may be don't have enough oil in it, but on saying that I have no warnings indicating this.

I don’t know why you would reset the long-term adaptions unless you’d changed either the complete transmission or the mechatronic unit – certainly not when you change the fluid. You end up in a situation where the clutches are trying to relearn their correct shift times from scratch and you risk burning them out while the controller tries to figure out the new control pressures.

Did you have the engine running while you set the fluid level and also use Lifeguard Fluid 6?

I stupidly thought I knew what I was doing.

When filling from the bottom car was off, once oil started to trickle over I replaced drain bolt lowered car, started it up, let it idle for a bit then started through the gears, first fill triggered trans failsafe program, which I expected it to do because there would have been next to no oil in the transmission. Switched it off then repeated fill until it trickled over, then repeated again with switching on and going through the gears. Third fill and it didn't want to take anymore. Did the gears again with engine on, then checked oil level by removing plug, it came running out, so replaced plug assuming that it was full.

After all this when driving it, it then started to behave erratic- different from before oil was changed.

After reading on here about other people having transmission issues and performing a reset I thought it was what it needed.

Any thoughts on a way forward?

Hopefully, you had the X level when you were filling the trans, and the engine running so the trans pump could be spinning to circulate the atf throughout the trans.

Oh sorry forgot, no I didn't add lifeguard fluid because I didn't know I had to ( I'm coming across as very thick here )

Yes car was level on hydraulic ramp.

Sorry to keep repeating the same question but was the engine running while you were setting the fluid level? Not before, not after, but during. If the engine isn’t ticking over while the new fluid is being pumped in then the fluid will drain down from the torque converter, hydraulic galleries, valve body etc. into the sump and the transmission will be underfilled. The fluid temperature should be 40°C.

No need to apologise RRPhil, simple answer no. I had engine off when filling, only on to cycle the gears.

Shit, that means that it is under filled.

My turn to apologise, just so I get this right- to fill from below the engine must be ticking over, fill till it trickles over-then refit plug and cycle gears.

Best course of action will be to find a shop that knows what they are doing and have it flatbeded to them.

You have already installed the wrong type of fluid into the trans and didn't know the correct procedure to refill/top off the trans.

Now that you contaminated the remaining fluid that is still in the trans you need to have it remove or flush before filling it with the correct fluid for the trans.

I used Meyle ATF Plus 6, that was recommended oil to use, what is lifeguard fluid 6?
