Trouble - what is this?

I just did an oil change on the 4.8is and when I took the filter can/cover out this fell on the ground. What is it? Any idea?

Don't loose any sleep over that part. It appears to have come from your oil filter housing that aligns the filter end up. Let me double check.....

yep, I believe it is the bottom of your filter supporting dome PN:11427506678

Part #2
From your image one of the three fingers is broken. cheap part

This is what I thought at first but I looked online for pictures from different angles and no side of part #2 looks similar to what I got.
And, yes, it looks like one 'finger' is broken.

I started the car and it runs well but I wonder if it's not part of #2, what is it going to brake?

If it came out of the oil filter housing then it is #2. There was a posting a while ago on someone who had a oil filter housing failure on a 4.8is. He ended up replacing the entire housing as he was worried to death about "what ifs" as there was a lot of conflicting advice being posted and whispering in his ear at the local dealer if I remember correctly.

Good day all!

That part you have there is from the inside of the oil pump itself. Think it is some kind of pressure plunger or anti-flow back device... look at the thread i'm doing on the 2004 project starting on the bottom of page 8 thru maybe page 10... I tore my oil pump apart to clean it... I had one of the three parts that was in there when new... The parts not being there has not affected my motor nor others who know their oil pump doesn't have them either... There are pictures and such to follow where these parts were in my thread... I'll see if I can get the link inserted for ya...

I can't see any images...but if what fell out looks like the images below...it is an oil check valve or anti flow-back valve used on the N62 engines with the oil filter canister located on the UNDERSIDE of the engine:

This is part of the oil check valve, or oil drain-back valve, depending on the terminology you use. When you stop the engine, it stops the oil from draining back into the sump. This means that oil is already there when you restart the engine, it doesn't have to be pumped up. Many filter designs have this valve inside the filter. BMW puts it in the oil filter reservoir. I remember a campaign on replacing it years back. I also know that more than one person who found the pieces did nothing except remove them, and disaster did not follow.

Here is another one, with a resolution history.

Here is the SIB - Service information Bulletin

Good day!

While the three parts do go together in that fashion, they don't fit in the filter cap with the filter and center support in there... They go in the output flow from the pump into the filter channel... see my posts... I think the bulletin added will also state that it really doesn't matter if the parts are in there...

Cheers!
