New Battery: Do I Need BMW Dealer to Install
2005 BMW X5 4.4i V8
Just removed an Interstate MTP-93 Battery which is discontinued because it's only putting out 690 CCA. It is rated at 850 CCA. I can buy a Duralast battery rated at 900 CCA or an AutoCraft battery rated at 850 CCA, both with 3 year warranties. The web page has a disclaimer saying that the battery information must be reset in the power management center by a BMW tech. Is this so? Can I not do it? Disclaimer: REQUIRES PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION; Battery is vented to outside; Computer must be reset; See manual for safe installation; 45 minute Install; Battery in rear; DO NOT attempt to install batteries in this vehicle. The battery information must be reset in the power management system.; Please inform customers and recommend that they have their battery replaced at an authorized BMW dealership/shop.; Battery Spec: 900 CCA Respectfully |
No. Don't need the $tealer to help with it. :D

LOL!
So I just hook up and go? |
Yep, Just reuse the vent tube that was on the old one. Dragging that beast out of the lower trunk area is no small feat in itself. But that is all there is to it.
Just do yourself a favor while your in there, clean up the hole, add air to the spare and look for any water leaks that might kill off all your electronics in the near future as winter is coming on strong in the US. |
I didn't think that the AGM battery would have a place for the vent tube.
Thanks. |
Yep still do. Just installed one on a E39 application.

Recommended battery class size is a 49/H8.
Yes vent the battery regardless if you but an AGM or a regular flooded lead-acid battery...both will work on the e53 generation e53 X5. There should be an easy to find video on youtube on how to remove the spare from an e53 X5. If you haven't seen or read about this...you may want to look it up so that you can see how simple this procedure is...which can help get the spare out of the way without pulling a muscle in your back. :D It's the e70 and newer X5's that require battery registration when you install a new battery. They have a totally different communication bus system (MOST, Byteflyte, BSD, LIN, etc) that we don't have...along with an IBS (intelligent battery sensor) on the (I believe) negative battery cable that we DO NOT have. Again, definitely hook up the vehicles gray battery vent hose to the hole in the side of the battery (positive side)...then depending on which battery brand you get...look for a spare plug (either in a bag attached to the side of the battery or built into one of the terminal covers)...which you need to plug up the hole on the negative side of the battery: http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...%20e53%203.jpg http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...ent%20hole.jpg http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...20Hole%203.jpg {Again, its the new generation BMWs (the ones that have iDrive) that require new battery registration due to having an IBS...or the LIN and/or BSD bus for new gen BMWs built prior to the 2004 model year like the the e90/e65/e66} http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...20Info%201.jpg http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...20Info%202.jpg |
Hey!!!!
Thank you all so much for your assistance and information!! The pictures definitely do a lot for me. I just bought the battery and it did have a hole on each side, as well as a red plug. Kudos to you all!!! I have one more question, but it doesn't pertain to a battery. I will post a new thread on reinforcement plate fasteners. Thanks again!!! |
