Reverse wont work

I have an X5 2002 3.0. I was at the store and when I started the car to leave it wouldn't move on Reverse. Works fine on Drive. Any ideas?

Assuming it is an automatic, I would guess the mechatronic solenoid for reverse has gone out or the fluid is low. Or a combination of both...

Thanks. It is an automatic. Any idea where the mechatronic solenoid is located?

Mechatronic sloenoids are attached to the mechatroninc uint (valve body). You have to drop the trans oil pan to get to it. You will need at least 5 liters of ZF lifeguard fluid that is correct for your trans (LG5 or LG6) and a trans filter min... This is IN THE TRANS... Not for faint of heart. But if you don't do it yourself we are talking $$$$. No shop will go to component level. They will only sell you a re-man trans and install. Sorry you are experiencing this problem, but google it and read everything you can. Someone somewhere has been through this and you will find some breadcrumbs to get you to where you need to be.

More Bad info being placed on the net or perhaps you didn't see that he has the 3.0 engine which means he has the GM trans and not the ZF trans, which means his trans uses regular Dexron III or VI and not the uber expensive ZF lifeguard ATF.

Hello, I had the same problem with my BMW X5 2002, the day I buy it, that same day gave me problems of reverse, the reverse lights turned on but remained neutral, the next day the reverse worked, change the solenoids and The problem followed, finally end up changing the valve body for a used one that buy for 150 $ and go 2 years without problems. Check Sonnax, the made hi quality valve bodies, around 500$
