X5 (E53) Cargo Cover
3 Attachment(s)
Hi,
My first post on the Forum in the hope that some one can give me some guidance on which is the correct Cargo cover (Cargo blind?) for my car. 2003 X5 (E53) 3.0d turbo diesel. I bought the car last week but unfortunatley the previous owner(s) have misplaced the cover. Trying online to identify the correct type is driving me nuts. Is is a concertina type? Is it a roller type? Are there different version of each? etc. etc. This is what the receptacles in the side panels look like - Can anyone please advise what type of blind fits these? Thanks in advance. Rob Perth Western Australia |
It's called a roller blind, and looks like this...

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for your very prompt response - now at least I know what I'm looking for. Ahhh, well . . back to ebay . . . Cheers, Rob |

I was lucky - my 05 still has the original. The cargo net was missing though and I found one in new condition on TradeMe (NZ version of Gumtree) for $100. Snapped it up... :-) Don't give up - it'll be out there somewhere. Try wreckers too - and there are a few here in NZ too. Freight to Perth might sting a bit though...:yikes: |
OK, thanks again.
As a matter of interest I looked it up on the ECS Tuning site, as noted on the bottom of the photo you posted. It has this helpful little hint Rear Sun Blind - Beige Keep the sun from annoying your rear seat passengers Useful if your passengers are curled up in the cargo area I guess . . |

The link given above to look at #15 in the diagram...may be incorrect for a 2003 e53. The prefacelift e53s...generally uses item #2 seen in the diagram below. The self retracting (#15) type pictured in the replies above are probably INCORRECT for the OP if their build date is PRIOR to 8/2003. One must pay attention to the build date supplemental column in the parts database. :) Click link below to go directly to an online part database. Look at the "breadcrumb" links at the top of the page so that you know how to get back to the correct diagram (it will be in VEHICLE TRIM). Input the last 7 digits of your VIN...that way the diagrams will be more specific for your build date...#15 may not even appear in the part nbr index if it won't work for your vehicle's build date range) {#15 in diagram is only for 8/03-up build dates...item #2 is for prefacelifts} Extending cargo cover/partition net | BMW X5 E53 X5 3.0d M57N Europe http://ills.bmwfans.info/2p91.png https://xoutpost.com/attachments/bmw...ics-cover1.jpg |
All totally correct, Qsilver7, but the OPs photo indicated the the roller blind I suggested is correct - the fitting points for each type are rather different.
And I have one too! We should make it mandatory to have the build month/year in our sigs. ;) Down Under we all tend to get very similar models, with not many cars being fully optioned with items like electric rear seats etc. Not sure why this but it's probably due to the very extended delivery time for optioned cars. It's a long way to Spartenberg!! |

Gentlemen,
Being an X5 owner for all of 5 days now I'm on a fairly steep learning curve, as you can imagine, so am most appreciative of your advice and assistance. I'm now getting my head around the importance of the build month/year issue, and it appears that Wayne is correct - the blind should fit as my car was built in September 2003, which I believe makes it a post face-lift model - correct? Doing a search on the very helpful parts site (thankyou, QS7) shows the blind I need is Item 15, the roller blind. All this is most fortuitous because I purchased one on ebay last night !! When I read QS7's post this morning I thought I may have cocked up, but now that I know the car's build date I think all is well. Once again, thankyou both for your input. I think I might have to change my Login name to "X5Virgin" |
Great...thanks for the update. Now, hopefully the blind will work with the type of rear seats you have. It looks like you have electric rear seat backs (do they have the ability to recline, slightly?).

I have a black one in my ceiling, (where else would you keep it) that I doubt I'll ever use. I have a car fridge in the back and the blind just gets in the way. If you're prepared to pay freight from Qld and a little more, it's yours. I will need to check it first to make sure it is in good condition though. |
QS7,
My rear seats don't appear to have the recline function - just a bracket sticking out of the side wall onto which the seat back latch mechanism engages. Released by a little catch on the top of the seat back. Neil, Bugger - too late.:( I've already bought one on ebay - see my previous post. Thanks anyway. |

Still have the Black one? |
I do, but unless you are in Australia anytime soon to collect it, I don't believe posting it to the US would be cost effective.

As a fellow West Aussie, if you need advice or assistance, send me a PM and I'll try to help out. |
Before I order this cover, may I ask what's the point of having it?
I've got reclining rear power seats however I changed the plastic "rails" on top of rear cargo trim pieces. My "rails" were beige and I swapped everything in the car to black. I didn't pay attention to the plastic rail piece, I thought they were all the same. Is it better to get the OEM cover or something like this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/333841544144 |
That's up to you. I prefer OEM cover and use it all the time. It just covers your cargo from peepers really, but I use them in every vehicle we own. E61 wagon, e53, e70, and f15. Had to get the wagon one sent over from the UK because finding a black one in the US costs $400+.
|
Probably will come in handy since I'm going to install an expensive sub and amplifier in the trunk.
In all of my trips to tha junk yard, which were many I've never seen this cover. They must remove it to remove the battery and throw it somewhere... |
Most owners remove them for the added height in the cargo compartment. They get left in the corner of the garage when the x5 gets traded in or sold. I've had to buy them separate from the vehicle we've purchased more often than not.
