Do N62 motors have timing chain guide issues?

Need some help, it's not clear to me if the motors in the 4.4 and 4.8is (N62) have the same defective timing chain guide rail issues the M62 has. Is there value in preventively replacing them in the N62?

No biggest issue with the n62 are the valve stem seals, valve cover gasket, timing cover gasket, and the Coolant transfer pipe leaks out from the whole in front. Very rarely does the timing get messed up on those.

No. Never heard of that. Check all the e60 and e65 forums as well and you will see that those n62 powered models, some with over 200k miles, have never had an issue with that.

Ditto the answers above....the N62 is a completely differnt engine vs the M62/M62TU.

Timing chain guides is NOT an issue with the N62...just like it's not an issue with the M54. The N62 is a different beast with its own special faults. :)

And to add to the N62 issues...would be the "intermediate levers"....a google search using "BMW N62 intermediate levers" should bring up some results as to what can occur on cold starts.

N62 engines do have timing chain guide issues but they are far less common than M62 failures. Say 20 M62 failures for every 1 N62 failure. N62s do have timing issues if you run them low on engine oil. We've seen several N62s jump timing and run like crap when they are run low on oil. Guides should not be an issue on an N62 provided you are keeping up with your oil change intervals using a quality oil. The N62s we do see with failed guides have been vehicles with sludged up engine internals. The guides become hard, brittle and begin to disintegrate when the oil itself begins to degrade. These are also the vehicles that we commonly see exhibiting valve stem seal issues. We have seen N62s in excess of 200k miles that don't smoke in the slightest, these are the vehicles that maintain a 5k oil change interval with a high quality synthetic and have nice golden internals when you do have to open them up.

Very interesting post guys!!!

I have a rattle issue and hoping for some expertise to help me diagnose...

I have a 4.8is 120k miles. There is a definite rattle that sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine. You can also hear the noise clearly from the wheel arches.

I don't think (???) it's the cam chains. I have some experience with cam chains with Audi's and with those if the cam chain followers are worn you get a rattle in initial cold start up for 2-5 seconds as the oil pressure builds up and the cam chain tension increases. After which the rattle should become far less noticeable, or disappear. If not they're about to go!

On the X5 there does not seem to be any initial rattle upon start up, but the noise becomes aparrent as the revs drop to their normal idle level (revs are higher initiall when you first start then engine and then drop to the normal idle after 1-2 minutes).

Once idling at the normal level the rattle is permanent. I guess revving would make it disappear - I'll check that later though!!

I've taken two video's to show the issue (24 and 43 seconds so kept it short and sharp!) Can you guys take a look and let me know what you think:

VIDEO 1 (inside engine bay):

VIDEO 2 (outside car and wheel arches):

What do you think is the likely culprit here?

Hello. I have a 07 e70 4.8i which is almost to same noise of timing chains that you had. Did you ever get your car fixed?
thanks

Unfortunately not. Car is now sold and never got to the bottom of it :-(
