With modern day car it's best to be knowledgeable about inspecting used cars prior to purchasing. I always carry a bluetooth scanner with me when I inspect a used car. If the readiness is not complete, I know that the seller had recently reset the trouble code. I normally walk after this.

Thanks for the 'constructive' criticism. I can see now that my PPI was woefully inadequate. If only you were there to help me out at the beginning. I will be sure to take full advantage of your advice for the next time I purchase a car and bring a full compression, leakdown, and fuel system tester with me. I'm sure the dealership will have no issues with me tearing into the engine in their parking lot.
For everyone else out there who runs into a 'misfire only on idle' issue with your E53, hopefully this thread can help you out.
