Radar interference?
I have the Cobra detector (99$) which is horrible in the X5. I got a ticket with it cause it didnt see the radar. But in my other, older car it works ok. Is it becauseo fht windshield or something, cause i read in the manual that certain windshields interfere because of the heating or something. Anyway, if that is the problem, which is a good dector for the X5? Are there any "special" ones that use the Nav screen or something? Or any good one that works with the cigarette lighter? Thanks for your time and help.

All X5 in the US comes with the "standard" or "non-comfort" windshield, which shouldn't cause such interference. I'm not sure if you can order the "comfort" windshield when ordering your X from the factory, but a few had been able to ordered it from the parts department when replacing their "broken" OEM windshield. It's know that these "comfort" windshields can be problematic for radar detectors, but those windshields would have a special "opening" up near the rear view mirror for such thing as radar detector, fast trak passes, etc... My V1 is working fine on my X and I know that I don't have comfort glass.

I've used my BEL RX65 plugged to the cig lighter, but had to tape it down to the dash. I also have a Valentine to put in the new X5.
Also thinking of getting one of those laser disrupting license plate covers. Any info on that out there?:dunno: Some of the troopers out there are learning to keep their radar set on low power. This gets you into their effective zone with miminal warning.:tsk: If you "...feel the need, the need for speed":D , you are going to have to invest $$$ for good radar detection. It will still be cheaper than the ticket and increased insurance premiums. Sometimes your most effective warning device is your Mk-1 eyeball.:wow: You can't sit back and expect technology to do all the work. |
Its not the X5 its your detector! No Radar Dectetor under $300 is going to be truely effective and no detector is 100%. Do yourself a huge favor and buy a Valentine One, it was $406 shipped from the Valentine web site. Besides being the best Detector, some may argue, it comes with the tools to hardwire it making the ugly cig lighter power cord obsolete. I have mine hardwired to the garage door opener power wire (the brown one) and it fits nicely up by the rearview mirror. If you are not on a budget I highly suggest buying the Steath One to go with it, it fully integrates the V1 in your X5, and has nice features like not going off below a certain speed and you can mute it with your steering wheel controls. Like burkleymh said, you have to invest some money if you want better protection, but its worth it - your one ticket may have paid for the V1.

Money is no object for SPEED lol err i mean protection

$99 is the problem, not the X. Get a Valentine 1(best) or and passport/escort.

I swear, this board is like Miss Cleo--- You're reading my mind!!
I was just thinking the other day about integrating a radar detector in the X5, but only wanted it wired in. (ANd obviously that means investing in a unit I'd WANT hard-wired to my baby...) Then before I even thought to post the question, here's the answer!! THANKS! Mindfull |
