Recommend a good Winshield shop

Does anyone know of a good winshield shop in and around Queens/Long island New York area? I live in Baldwin, Long island.

Most of the Safelite shops are good. Just make sure you know what glass you need and that they order the right seals

Touch of Glass in Great Neck

Would these places know to order the correct glass or I have to provide my own? I have the Saint GObain Sekurit brand.

U going through insurance or what ....
Depends on $$ at the end of the day if you want the roundel for the roundel factor..
Glass coverage on insc. Most carriers at least in Gothan state will cover generic, especially given the age of the vehicle.

If you go through a bodyshop to you your glass done, they have ways......to get OEM covered under glass...it's really going to boil down to both the installing shop and the haggle factor

I'm paying out of pocket. And would like the original or better put in. When I say better I don't mean those comfort glass. Just the same as what's in the truck or better quality that won't break that easily. I don't have those comfort glass presently.

I just got a quote from Safelite for 328, but I'm not sure if it's original glass they'll use. I did it on their website.

SG, PPG, Pilkinton - really luck of the draw, I suppose.
Best served by just calling the glass shops you choose to get more in specificity.

Safelite replaced my windshield 3 times, 3 different days with 3 new pieces of glass before my rain sensor worked.
They ended up ordering a BMW windshield.
All handled under insurance and Safelite did not give up until I was happy.
I got a UV coated BMW windshield that the tech said is like wearing $1000 sun glasses (must be the comfort glass).
one drawback is that my gate opener (garage door remote) does not work as far distance then it did.

I went to TOuch of Glass. The job was ok. Quick installation. Had a little issue but it's resolved

What happened? Need to replace mine as well and I was going to check them out.

They didn't seat the weather strip on the passenger side properly. And the weather strip that runs on top isn't centered. Otherwise hassle free job.

Gotcha. I was going to ask if they can use the OEM style weather stripping instead of that generic rubber one they use on every car. That stuff promotes dirt getting trapped underneath as rust forming.

I replaced the sides....but I'm sorta OCD like that....
You can manipulate it and squeeze the metal tension on the sides , but depending on the mileage/age of you vehicle, it's will be tight but not as tight/uniform as when it rolled of the line

xRide 02-07-2017 09:27 AM

I don't know the technique to installing windshields so I hoped and pray they did the right thing. I am OCD as well and want things to be as if it came from the factory; but I come to realize it won't be that way and accept it as is. Once no major issues I'm ok with it.

XRide -

As long as the side trim looks/f1ts to your liking, that's what counts.

It's basically rubber with a metal channel - tabbed. That channel sits onto the sides of your windshield. Once you pull it off....the tension changes per se. You can squeeze the sides of the metal to make it tight, tigther - it's just not uber tight as original IMO.

If you find you still don't like the slop factor, you can always remove it from the bottom windshield, squeeze the channel so it's touch tighter and then refit it back on the windshield.

so I finally got to really inspect the job properly. This is what is going on. The reason the weather strip isn't sitting properly on the windshield is because the windshield isn't centered properly. More of the glass is on the driver side than the passenger side. So the weather strip, especially the upper portion will not even sit on the glass because there is no "edge" for the rubber to sit on. Needless to say I am now disappointed.

Is it possible to get this re-done with same windshield? Meaning, removing the glass, get rid of the old glue etc, and center the glass properly?

jsoto 02-07-2017 06:41 PM

Eeeks. It's doable...when the remove a windshield, they remove it off the panel. Now it's just 2X as it's the panel and glass. I would just double eyeball it to make sure there are no scratches incurred on the glass side when the do the sealant removal.
