Battery Competely Dead

Hi My battery is completely dead ,, worked fine but sat for two days and it went full dead.
no lights or anything
Battery is about 6 years old and I know it needs to be replaced. ,, problem is I can not open the hatch to get to the battery
is there a way to open the hatch and get to the battery?

Thank you
Jim

Try jumping the car to get it started to get enough power to open the hatch? The car should run fine of just the alternator you just need the jump to get it started since your battery is dead.

Assuming you can get into the car, there is a manual release for the rear hatch. It's described in the manual; open the small cover on the inside of the hatch and pull the release.

Why not use the jump connections in the engine bay? Little red plastic tab with a plus sign on it right hand side of the engine bay?

Ditto above...if you can get into the cabin...pop the hood & try hooking power (jumper cables or battery charger) to the jump start terminals in the engine bay...this should provide enough power to utilize the central locking system to pop the tailgate open:

Manual liftgate & tailgate unlock procedures from owners manual:

Thank you
Tried to put my battery charger on the under hood + post and - on the engine and after about 2-3 minutes my alarm started to go off,
so disconnected everything I can get into the X5 and will try and open the hatch manually from the inside. Battery is almost 6 yrs old.
Thank you
best regards
Jim

Could be the battery. Just wen through this with mine. Battery kept draining overnight. Turned out to be the telematic not going to sleep.

Yes, good point. I've been there before. Battery completely dead, then as you start to charge it, it sets the alarm off. Very annoying.

So if you want to open the back without using a sawzall or the jaws of life, you can lower the rear seats and crawl to the back. (on my '01, at least) The manual release is behind a rectangular plastic piece a few inches above the lower hatch, on the right side (left side from your vantage point) of the upper hatch ("liftgate"). Pull that out and it is the manual release.

From there, you should be able to access and disconnect the battery if you want to charge it up without the alarm going off.

Here is the info from my owner's manual:
Attachment 71308

Similar issues on our '04 turned out to be the alternator not kicking out enough so anything short of a 40min run would result in a dead battery!
Had to buy some heavy duty jump leads also as the cheapo ones kept setting the alarm off

Wow, 6 years on battery life.
Because of the heat, I give Texas battery 4 years, tops.

Replace regardless of operation.
They just cook themselves into oblivion
