There are no stupid questions!
Hi there fellow soldiers in the battle against BMW's faults and inadequacies.
I have been following various Eonon threads cos my radio BM54 is starting to go sideways but I have a question. When I replace the front screen/ monitor why is it necessary to leave the existing radio in place and plug back into it. Seems strange as it is not really working very well. :D |
Good day!!
I'm not sure we (meaning ME) understand the question... Maybe I'll do some research to see if I can find what you are talking about... One second... Be right back... Maybe.... Cheers!! |
If there is nothing wrong with the monitor in the dash, no reason to replace it. The radio sounds like what you need to replace.

I could have been clearer I guess, the video I have seen shows that after running the extension cable back to the spare wheel well and plugging the 2 smaller leads into the extension cable the new cable is plugged back into the BM radio in the trunk is this correct?

That's not the radio in the trunk, it's the DSP amp. There's a pretty large thread on how to install these and similar units. Search for the Dynavin install thread (identical process) and the "stay away from Eonon" thread (don't believe the name, largely positive). Both are very detailed. :)

What exactly is happening when you say your BM54 is going sideways?

It is a figure of speech meaning that the BM54 is just not doing what it should be... Could be anything... Like your printer or TV... It's just not working correctly... Cheers!! |
William, that made me crack up! My X has been going sideways for quite some time now...despite all my diagnosis tools and this educational forum, that's all I can come up with. Sad!

Acidgreeny, all joke aside. My question still stands. What exactly is happening, are you losing sound or are you not able to turn the screen on...?

There's a lot of variation, so OrangeFurious wasn't being totally daft. The battery tray can contain a radio/amp combo (the BM54 module?) or just the DSP amp module. Sometimes the radio or amp module is in the left rear compartment under the CD changer too. If I was adding a Dynavin or an Eonon to my car, there's nothing to run to the back. All the wiring is up front, including all spearker wiring. I'd look at relocating the MID display to the boor/trunk though, so I don't lose the MID functions. If your car has Factory Nav and/or DSP then you will likely need a loom from the front to the back, to connect the the speakers at the very least. Each aftermarket unit will be spec'ed for a specific factory config. so make sure you get the right one for your exact car. acidgreeny, since your exact car has neither NAV or DSP but still has the radio/amp module in the rear, you'll need a loom run from front to back for the speakers, some signaling and the aerial. |

https://youtu.be/gLwd19uAFpI this is the video I am referring to.😋😁

Does the video state the unit is a BM54? Maybe it is a DSP module?
The speaker connections are back there in your car, so that covers one side of the connections (the plugs removed from the BM54 to the loom) but I'm not sure what the other connection would be for (the loom back into the BM54), unless it is to pickup signaling such as the data bus for steering wheel controls, aerial power etc. You've made me curious now - I'll chase this up later and post back here if I find anything. Links to the video in question and the replacement to head unit you are considering would be helpful. :-) *edit* - you beat me to it with the link! :-) |
I guess he doesn't really specify what it is but my understanding is that dsp is not plug and play but requires some cutting of wires etc. I really want to give the Eonon a go but am a little confused. As for the radio down to 1 speaker occasionally 2 but never sure what your going to get. Everything else is fine TV cd stacker etc all work great. Is the GPS plug and play and are the monitor cars pre wired for it , the GPS drive can be bought cheaply and would be a nice addition if I get the radio repaired.
