Wierd connector under hood behind air box
 

Found this connector with a cap and another behind it but they both have different pins

Does your X5 have headlight washers?

Yes it does. They work perfectly. This connector is situated near the strut area

Servotronic steering option?

Could be for the front parking sensor harness?

Yes any number of auxiliary features that the X5 can offer and by different markets. BMW was pretty good back in those days with pre-wiring their vehicles to be be able to accommodate what-ever features the X5 could be equipped with.

Oh I see. As my nav unit has aux heat menu but only allows me to set a timer And the last option (I think it's aux heat) can't remember what it is is greyed out

I have the same plug, servotronic steering rack option.
the wire attached is long enough to reach the top of the steering rack?
I love how BMW prewired most options! :) makes it fun and easy to update!
