ESS M54 Supercharger for my 5MT

ESS M52TÜ/M54 VT1 Supercharger System - ESS Tuning

I am thinking of getting one of these for my 03 5mt. I had a Dinan SC on my 1999 Coupe I bought back in 02. I really liked the whine of that thing.

Anyone else with thinking of getting one? We would have 3 pedals and similar power and torque as the v8 guys. Similar is used loosely.

I considered one of these very seriously for my '04 3.0. But what I never looked too deeply into was why they didn't offer the twin screw units for the E53. Now that I've been futzing with the E46 330, I am once again playing with the idea of one of these for it.

FWIW, I have run an ESS SC on my 540i6 for over 10 years. I have always been pleased. I have always wondered why they petered out on the N62's for LCI 4.4's and 4.8's plus the 545, 645, 745, etc. If they'd look my way, they could probably convince me to let them try one on my 4.8. But that is not a look I need to think ab rt now.

That E46 SC looks like it could transform the relatively benign E46 3.0 into something approaching the twin turbo 335 power.

In my opinion and Porsche 951/335Xi/TRD 4Runner SC experience, there is nothing like SC or Turbo power coming on.

Something else to dream about for my E46

I always thought about adding a twin screw to the X or the wagon. Maybe I can scrounge some overtime this year and fund a stage one for shits and giggles...

I feel like it would make it more fun to drive but with the tall 4:10 gears and only 5 gears you would be rowing too much to enjoy it. A 3:64 gear change from the 4.4 would probably make a big difference.

I was thinking that too. I wonder how much it would lower the rpms at 75mph in 5th with that part change from the 4.4.

Question is, do they make a 3.64 front diff for the X5?

squidzilla 02-12-2017 10:47 PM

Dang. Another thing for me to research. I think a member named greendragon or something did a diff swap. I need to look up his stuff.

front and rear diffs are interchangeable from 4.4 you will have to do both. The diff change would net you a 400rpm change. From 3600 RPM to 3200 RPM at 75mph. Then a 6 speed swap would help you go from the final gear ratio of 1.00 to 0.86 which with the 3.64 gears would drop your 75mph RPM down to 2750 RPM.

If I had true fuck off money I would do an ESS kit on my M54 5MT in a heartbeat and swap 4.4L diffs for a 3.64 ratio
