I think it's Time To Let Go

I've had the X since new.
Always been maintained to ~my standards~.

Been hemming and hawing at replacing it for the last couple of years. Just have not found anything yet - dumped all that money into RE, which has been worth the investment to do....

As I was mulling the spring to do list, I'm just not motivated to keep it running like a champ. If I posted some of the stuff I spend on it....many would just go bonkers.

Just ordered some trim last week just because it was not perfect to my ~golden eyes~. Chasing a small oil leak, that I suspect is the valve cover itself. My powder coating guy has increased his rate 2fold, but he still deserves it, as his work is that good...

And then it becomes one of those....well, since you're in there doing the VC, might as well attack the WP and stat, etc, etc. I know myself well enough that I can't leave well enough alone and will dive in to touch it all. VP has been touched 2X already. If I'm doing spring maint., I will probably ProActively change all 4 Brake Flex lines....on the Brembo BBK. 3 lines have burst in me , so every 2 years or so, I've learned to be cautious and replace them all.

Gave her some new mirror covers this fall just cause the X wanted it.
Entire front upholstery was replaced/redyed and it's fresh as it can get. Nice textured leather. I must have replaced the steering wheel on this thing 3X....when the leather on the M tri stitch goes smooth, rip and replace.

As a owner, I'm really discouraged about my top d0lla custom headlights for sure. I w1LL never ever entertain such a mod again. Just thinking about get me unravled.

Last Sunday, I finally went to the garage to scour to unpile the underride bar. Either it will get installed or the golden unicorn is upforsale.

I think the love affair is done gents. Still nothing that interest me, so possibly I'll just find a 18 months or so swapalease just to placate until something catches the eye

That sucks. I imagine we all hit a point where enough is enough.

What are you thinking of getting instead? If you want a high HP SUV without forced induction I think your only options are the Jeep SRT and Dodge Durango SRT. 450-475 HP give or take.

J- not many maintain the X as well as you do. I would hate to see her and you go. Love your free to good home posts. Not many doing such nice things anymore and everyone trying to make a buck. Hope it all works out for the best man.

I've been trying to screw up the courage to sell my '05 X5 4.8is for a couple of months now, but excuses to put off putting it on the market keep coming up. Maybe it is that this is one of 3 X5s that I've owned and by far the best driving (the others were an '08 4.8i sport and a '13 5.0). I've also had 2 X3s and several of those car things BMW builds. And I have a '16 Durango R/T for my work vehicle.

The Dodge has the advantage of being newish and company owned, so I don't have to care much about it. And that is good, because even though I spec'ed it, I don't care much for it. It has some Hemi noise, but feels heavy and the handling just doesn't come close to the BMW X's. I really notice when the roads are wet (not enough snow this year to evaluate that), although tires are probably contributing to my butt-sense.

Point being, if that was your trade option, I'd think long and hard about ways to keep the X5 or find another one in newer or lower mileage condition.

I understand the delimma but I cant justify a car payment or dropping a load of cash on something else when it won't cost me that much to keep mine on the road. I'm looking at dropping $5k in a few months on it but thAts cheaper than $50k for something newer (still not new tho)

The X was my personal DD for the initial 5 years. It's the wife's DD since then. It's still my Home Depot Grocery Getter. I don't mind p1ssing money at it when it's needed but there are some unexpected things like the sunroof cassette that sometimes get's under your skin.

I used to keep a fairly detailed repair dossier, documented everything in excel. Sorta given up the ghost on that Eon's ago. For 2017, for sure, if I move forward with the spring maintenance plan, flex brake lines and water pump, just because proactively, and VCG. We're talking $5 bills+ alone on the flex lines Might be chasing a rabbits tail on the oil issue. If the hands are touching the VC, then it's a downhill syndrome on going all in down to the VP...

If I had to do this in spring of 2016, I would have done it with no qualms.
I dunno. Just tallying up the sh1t list, and it's sorta giving me reservations....

14thbmw - I would not trade it. Probably end up giving it to my little bro if he would want it. The value is much much higher than book.

It's still better than the landfill when there seems to be a majority of value oriented members here these days...

:flame: Suit on, but it really boggles the mind when I see fellow owners here putting 3/16-1/4" bolts right into their bodywork of their cars....

I really hope you keep it, but if the golden unicorn bars go for sale, please PM me!

You were the one that contacted me about fixing your headlights, right?

I've been on the same boat with mine. It needs rotors and calipers, and that is about to drive me over the edge on maintenance. I've done tons of recent maintenance in the past 2 years, yet it is getting to the age where parts will nickel and dime you. Seriously want to trade for a 09+ Tahoe/Suburban/Avalance/Silverado but the X5 doesn't come close to those in trade in value.

Totally understandable. My eye has been wandering for quite a while.

At the shop doing RnR on the exterior, hopefully will rekindle the magic.

Same boat as you in a way, the steering rack is making some noise and last year I would have gotten a new one, no questions asked.

Now? Thinking hard before pulling the trigger.
