Water Pump

As I tally the list of potential all in scenario....what's your take on the Water Pump on M62

IMO, there's 2 camps...
Replace it every X years/miles

Or the latter, where the latter is wait till it breaks. You can hear the bearings go bad, etc, etc...

What camp do you fall in ?

I check it for play once in a year to know it is in good working order.

I agree with the PM every (??) miles... Having had to drive home with no water pump TWICE, let's do the Preventative Maintenance (PM) route!!

Cheers!!!

I was pulling up my service records....I stopped keeping tabs awhile back. Looks like on paper, I last changed it 50,000 miles ago - which sounds about right from a PM standpoint to do it again. Somehow I think when I did some service 35000 miles ago, I might have changed touched it. This I don't have a record of, but I feel like I touched it.....it's my own fault for slipping on my notes.

I will add that, while it might not be typical for everyone, I got a NEW pump from the local parts store for my 540i... it lasted less than 30 minutes run time... It puked bearings and pulley parts all over the ground... I got the OEM from BMW which only cost about 17 bucks more at the time... I sold it with that pump on the car...

Go with the OEM stuff!!!

Cheers!!

Time to google...
oh boi
plastic impeller
metal impeller
cast impeller
who's got the most reliability in bearings.

My original one sh1t the bed around 50-55K if memory recalls
I replaced it with OE just because.....

I did some major stuff at 89, and changed it. No idead what I used....oe or oem...

I replace waterpumps when they let me know it is time. You can hear or see it is starting to fail, starts leaking water or bearings make noise. Replaced the pump at about 100,000 miles. Some will say it is better to do it as a PM based on rare instance of catastrophic failure that throws the fan into the radiator. Can't counter that but don't buy into it either. My PM is raising the hood and listening periodically. Know the sounds you should hear so the sounds you shouldn't are easily noticed--early warning system. No different than checking fluids every 500 miles.

I go with waiting until fluid comes from the weep hole or when play is present. I think as long as you regularly check it you can avoid complete failure. Only exception is with cars I never know when it was done or plastic impellers. Plastic impellers I say do at x miles.

I change them at failure, or every 100,000 miles. Whichever comes first.
