FM Modulator- how to bypass Antenna
Hi,
So an AUX cable will not work in my E53. This is because my FW version is too low (on 40, needs to be 43 or above). I don't really want to use an FM Transmitter, as it is hard to find a frequency, and interference/static is common. So, I discovered this FM Modulator. If I understand correctly, I put it on my antenna, and it will "over-ride" set frequencies (87.9 or 88.3). On that frequency, I will be the AUX/RCA input! Seems pretty darn good. But if I should just replace the radio all together, and it isn't too expensive, I'd be open to that too. As a sub would be nice. 1. Is this possible to use in the E53? 2. Is it as simple as 'intercepting' the antenna plug, or does it have multiple antenna's or other complications? 3. How will I power the modulator? 4. I did some research- do I only need to plug into this? http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/d58AAO...G-O/s-l400.jpg Here is the product itself: Link to FM Modulator here |
As per my PM to you, this should work a treat but note that you will need a Fakra version and not the standard car aerial (connector) version in the link above (the picture above is correct though - or at least the aerial connectors are but the unit itself is not actually an FM modulator).
You could use a third-party unit like this one... BMW AUX iPod Fakra Wired FM Modulator transmitter FMMOD4 iPhone MP3 Connects2 | eBay |
Cheers,
Is Fakra definately my only option? For example, could I get an adapter and just use a standard one? Reason being, Fakra I'd have to import a Fakra FM Modulator, and they're triple the cost where I am. For example, would this allow me to use a non-Fakra FM Modulator? Not quite the right adapter - you need something more like this set...

Would this one work?

You need a pair of adapters - one that converts the Fakra connector cable from the car's aerial system to the standard car radio aerial connector, then another that reverses this, from standard car aerial connector to a Fakra connector. Both adapters are fitted behind the head unit - easy to install. You will need to source a switched power feed for the converter unit itself. Here's one of the required adapters... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free...7-9d769532eae5 And here's the other part... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-...7-51afe83943d1 These are required in addition the the FM Modulator. |

If I went the adapter option, would this work? FM Stereo Modulator for Car FM Radio System - iPod / MP3 / DVD / 3.5 / RCA 12V | eBay |

Either will work fine. Personally, I'd go with the solution with the fewest connections (less to go wrong) but that's just me. And I don't rate good audio in the car as a high priority... not with "Check Brake Linings" on my BC every time I turn on the car right now! |

I'd agree with that! But timing might be an issue. So may go for the local one. The link expired on the other one. Could you please confirm- are these the right adapters?
