Sidewall separating from tire, need new tires, help me choose
So one of my tires has started separating the sidewall from the rest of the tire. There was no impact that caused this, it just has failed. Tread on all of them was due for replacement anyway. I live in the PNW and we get plenty of rain and more recently snow and ice in the winter the past few years. I have narrowed down my choices to three tires. Does anyone have any experience with these on the E53? I have a 2006 3.0 with TPMS and 17" rims.

Pirellis look good and are decent priced. Michelins are known to be great as well. I don't know much about thr Yokohamas. |
I put the Pirellis (stock 255 size on 18's) on my X5 at the start of winter and they've been the best all season I tried after about 6 sets of tires on the beast. Snow traction was very good for an all season and thus far dry traction and noise has been very good. All in all I have about 4K miles on them and they show no wear.
Hope that helps out |
Just put my third set of Yokohama Geolander tires on. This time went with the GO15 AT. We live 2 miles up a dirt road so every journey has an off-road element.
These new GO15 tires are really nice and much quieter than the previous Yokohamas. We also had to do my wife's 4Runner and it now has a set of Yokohama GO15 tires as well. |
I was always tempted by the Geolander, I'd lean that way for some off road traction for sure
|
Have you thought about hoping to at least a stock 18? There is a better selection in the 255/55/18 size. In particular the Continental DWS06. It's the end all be all as far as allseasons go.
|
I just put Continental CrossContact LX Sports on my winter wheels (18s). Porsche choosing this tire as OE fitment for the Cayenne helped with my choice.
Agree with Joshdub, the ContiExtremeContact DWS06 is an awesome AS tire, just ordered a set from Tire Rack yesterday (for my W211 Benz). |
I'm with the last two guys, Conti DWS is a fine all season choice, in 18" if you can get 'em. E70 wheels, with hubcentric ring adapters, seem to be available around here.
|
I'm all for Conti DWS, best all season tires I've ever owned. Ride fantastic and plenty of traction for the elements. Will be ditching the nittos I have on mine for those in a few weeks.

Recommend Michelin latitude hp touring

Wow, Tire Rack had the Conti DWS 06s on my doorstep less then 24hrs after ordering online. Unreal.
Came out of their Shreveport location. |
Another vote for the Conti's. I have used them on my e53 4.8is and love the wet/snow traction. 6 years now, third set. Just put them on the X3 (2016) replacing Goodyear RFT tires and there is a noticeable improvement in handling and noise. Haven't been out in real bad weather but my expectations are high.
|
I use the Michelin Latitudes. Pirelli snows. Used to use Vredesteins on my 1975 Datsun 280Z. An excellent wet weather tire.
|
Conti DWS 06 working very well on my '05 4.8is. Only concern is my X often sits for a week or more ar a time the Contis flat spot more quickly than the OEM Michelin Diamante (which i did not like otherwise). Time required to eliminate the flat spot is directly proportional to days sitting. Would still buy again as they are great otherwise.

Another vote for Continental DWS tires, excellent 4-season tires.
I think the new name is "DWS 06" or something like that. Wait for rebate around this time of the year, I think once a year, tire mfg's give rebate such as buy 4 tires, get a rebate of $80 or sth like that... |

Has a redesigned sidewall also..... |
My wife has DWS06 on her E70 with staggered 20" 214's - phenomenal tire so far and she loves it - they do run somewhat wider for their size, compared to my Toyo Proxes STII mine look flush with the wheel but hers have a bit of extra width, and her wheels are .5" wider than mine....
|
I have only one cautionary note about the Conti DWS, not an issue for you guys up north - they are a bit soft for summer use on hot Georgia asphalt. I'm probably the only guy in Georgia who swaps out for summer tires, but do and will do so in the next month. I'm due a new set of summer tires and am leaning toward the Conti Cross Contact UHPs, reasonably priced and higher wear scores than more expensive Michelins.
|
^^Good call and thanks Riggo - wife and I are moving to NC so I will keep it in mind, not as hot as Georgia, but in between -

Worthy of noting, the Conti Touring Contacts currently on the Benz have a treadwear rating of 320, the new Conti Extreme Contact DWS 06 has a 560 rating. more grip and longer tire life? Sounds like a win/win. I'm currently shopping for a set of AMG staggered wheels for the W211 Benz, for a set of Ultrac Vorti summer tires. The BMW & Benz will run staggered Vredestein summer tires from May to Oct, square Conti AS tires the other months. Looking at the rolling tire storage rack Tire Rack sells, anyone have this? |

Second, I have scoured our forum for the best tires to replace the Michelin MXV4 tires that came on my 2004 E53. Michelin discontinued that tire and I am looking for a replacement that looks the same. The Latitudes have too much side tread for me, it looks like a mud and snow tire. What have you or other members found to be the best looking tire for the 18" sport wheel? |
I'm having Conti UHP summer sport truck tires mounted today; I wasn't particularly impressed with the Cooper summer sports I ran the last couple of summers. I'll let you know what I think. On Tire Rack, they get better reviews than the more expensive Michelins.

I have 600 miles on a new set of the Yokohama YK-HTX from Discount Tires. I'm having to run them at 34 psi for a good balance between ride compliance and steering response. They're just a bit louder than the YK-580s they replaced, but not annoying. Haven't been caught on wet roads yet, and that's where the Yokohama tread compound really seems to shine, so we'll see how they do on a big Texas hill country trip this weekend.

Can't wait to get a big/wide set of staggered W211 AMG wheels to get the look/insane hot weather grip on the Benz. Even the wife is on board, hounding me for staggered VUVs on the MB. This can't be the same person getting on me about too many ties/rims in the garage last year, can it??? Hence the tire storage rack purchase. |

Lastly, I have an opportunity to get a set of 20" style 87 wheels with Conti DWS 06 tires on them with 80% tread for under $1400 with minor blemishes. What do you guys think? Go with the staggered 9.5/10.5 wheels with 315/275 tires on a non flared 2004 E53 3.0? I am going to drop at least $850 with mounting and balancing on the Conti UHP and not sure about the cost of the Vedersteins. Again I thank guys all for assisting me in my decision. I know your time and knowledge is valuable. |
Jay and I run the Ultrac Vorti.
I got mine from Group A.... Vredestein Tires for Sale | SUV Tires, Competition Tires, Classic Tires and More |

Check on E-bay for Group-A listings of these tires, call them and they will match price and ship same day. Group A is a few miles away from the hub where these tires enter the US, produced in the Netherlands. These guy deal in fresh rubber right off the cargo ships.

I ended up grabbing those 20" style 87 wheels with Continental DWS 06 tires. The rears are 95% and the fronts are about 75% but for $900.00 I had to go that route. Next up is the 4.8 flare kit and maybe bumper. I have some researching to do. They don't exceed the body lines but the 4.8 look is so much nicer. I have read about the retrofit flare kit for the 3.0d special edition and I checked my dealer and that is no longer available. Any links to the appropriate direction would be appreciated. Thanks to all the members that have helped me.

Good find.
Can't go wrong with that set-up at that price. |
Just an update. Sorry I haven't checked in here in a bit. But I went with the Pirelli Scorpion Verde They ride amazing and have great traction wet and dry. They were the cheapest of the 3 I had narrowed it down to, but it sure doesn't feel like it.
