Can someone tell me what this is?

Hi there X'rs! I am the new guy on here, but have owned Beamers since 2005. Their great cars, arguably my favorite DD's by far!
I have a 05 BMW 86k miles x5 4.4 sport/Nav/DSP/A6/Panorama Roof, Black on Black, I picked up recently. I found a hard plastic line that looks to be broken off, coming from the lower left side of the engine, then coming up to the upper left front of the engine and making an upside down U there, abruptly ending. It's about 5/16" OD and is accompanied by a OBD II code PO 442 Evap system leak detected. It has writing on the line, the legible portion in the pics show: 4466 DIN Is this normal how the hard plastic line terminates (I doubt it, lol) and then a rubber line is to hook onto that piece, or is it broken, and what part #'s do I need to get it back to original? Thanks in advance! |
Transmission/dif vent hose. It is supposed to be that way.

Evap code could just be a bad gas cap. Check your gas cap seal, if it's original it's worth replacing the entire gas cap. It's a cheap replacement and hopefully takes care of the code. If not there is also a little fuel tank breather that may need replacement. See this thread for reference: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...rge-valve.html
I had Evap Code when I first bought the vehicle, and replaced the gas cap and the code hasn't been back. |
...ditto replies above...this is an oft ask question from new owners...understandably it is weird to see these unattached "vent pipes"...but there are several of them around the vehicle:

You guys rock man! :gun: Killing it!!
That just made my day!! Not actually a problem after all. I just figured the engine when cold would oscillate its RPM's a little at idle, so I thought I had a vacuum leak. And yes the gas cap was missing when I bought it. I cleared the codes and we'll see if that stays off. Maybe there is another explanation? Anyone have their interior leatherette door skin pull back a little from the door handle, leaving a gap? Anybody do a write-up procedure for fixing that? I'm lazy and haven't checked the forum search yet. |
There are 6 words across the top of the page: HOME - FORUMS- ARTICLES - HOW TO's - FAQS - USER CP
All of those words/phrases across the top of the page are important links...the ones bolded in the sentence above...if you click on them at the top of the page...they are links to past info that has already been culled to help noobs (and us old timers) to quickly find many oft asked questions, mods, upgrades, etc. :) |
:bmw: These cars are great! The 4.4 engine I am still marveling at having had two with the 3.0 and also enjoying it.
How common is the TPS air pressure light on the dash going on along with the 4x4 light next to it coming on at the same time? I would think they both come on together to prevent damage to the transfer case...? And on my 3.0 X5 the cam position sensor bank 1 cam 1 circuit engine light and OBDII code came on, Gotta see about how long it is to replace it, or if like many other engines its got a false bad part due to a connector issue or metallic fines getting on the sensor tip?? QSilver thank you, I am going to get around to checking those buttons out soon. |
