Reading Error Codes in INPA
 

I've done a search and can't find what I'm looking for. Basically just want to use INPA to scan modules and for faults. Specifically, AC condenser (aux) fan isn't turning on (already replaced in 2013!) and want to use INPA to properly diagnose.

I've used NCS Expert to read and write modules for coding about a year ago, so I'm all set up. I can get to the screen and have both black dots light up confirming proper connection and between comp and car.

Then what? What specific module do I need to read? I'm surprised I haven't done this, yet I used the same software suite to code my car...

FYI.. I have the kit from the Romanian guy and I am on the same USB port (COM1, 1 ms latency etc...)

Start INPA.

Choose your chassis (E53).

F4 - Error Memory

F1 - Read Error Memory

Wait for a while!

Alright right after I posted I hooked up the computer to the car. I think under body or general, there is an air conditioning module. I went to hit F4 for error memory, then F1 to read. Nothing came up...

Not sure which module to read for the aux fan..

Aux fan is controlled from the DME (or DDE in my case), so you need to access the correct DME module, then find the Activate menu (F6?) to activate the fan (labelled as E-Blower I think).

On my DDE I can only turn it on or off but I think on some cars it can be driven at 10% right up to 90% by entering a value.

Okay... If I click on "Engine", I see the DDE options, but since mine is a 3.0i, I'm guessing I should select "MS 43.0 for M54".. This is the only option for the M54 engine..

I see the "F6 - Activate", is there another prompt after I select activate? I don't want to unintentionally select Activate and not know what will happen.

Also when I selected the MS 43.0 for M54, I got a message saying versions don't match, and I believe the build date did not match my car.. Any concern here?

Flying a little blind here as I have the M57 not the M54... but the version mismatch is fine - it's a language thing - just click OK or whatever.

Unless the version mismatch is the DME module hardware/firmware - the copy of INPA you have might only cater to version 43 of the M54 DME and your car is a different version. I know my INPA shows me several version of DDE (DDE 4, DDE 5 etc.) and only the right one works for my car (DDE 4 I think)

F6 - Activate takes you to another menu - it's safe to hit it. :thumbup:

Fan Does Not Run
 

Thanks for the response. I watched a YouTube video on how to use INPA as I believe I have old version. I went to the activate screen, then F3, then F3 again for E-fan. I tried 50% first and then 90% (max). Nothing came on. I checked the fuse box, all I could find is an "Electric Box Fan" which is only a 10 A fuse, not 50 as someone else reported. Fuse was intact.

Next I figured I would plug my Peake reader just for the hell of it and got 7d and 8d. 8d is Ebox Fan! 7d is not on the table which is weird. If I had my multimeter I would check for voltage but can't find it.

I took someone else's suggestion of removing the A/C pressure connector? Then run AC on Max, still no dice...

I think it's pretty safe to say the Ebox fan is bad, but I will verify with the multimeter to make sure it's getting juice.

I still did not figure out why INPA isn't reporting that the fan has a fault...

I think you may be confusing the Aux. fan with the E-Box fan. I'm pretty sure they are different things.

The Aux. fan is (of course) the large diameter electric fan behind the grill (in front of the radiator) - the fan you are trying to diagnose.

The E-Box fan is a small cooling fan inside the E-box (electronics box) just below the windscreen . It keeps the DME and the other electrics inside the E-Box cool. Item 2 in the image below: -

The two fans have no connection to each other .

BTW, When I look up the Peake codes I get: -

Table 0F - 8D - Engine Cooling Fan Control
Table 18 - 8F - E-box Fan

And the other code you got: -

Table 0F - 7D - Radiator outlet temperature sensor
Table 15 - 7D - Coolant fan final stage
Table 19 - 7D - E-fan
Table 27 - 7D - Signal Lambda probe before KAT
Table 61 - 7D - Signal Lambda probe before KAT

I think a quick and easy way to test the aux fan is simply unplug the pressure switch down by the compressor. The fan should go spool up to full song if it is good.
