Intake boot replacement 3.0i
 

Hey guys. Been having a little whistling coming from the intake boot and going to replace it.

My question after doing some reading a while back, will an intake boot from an e46 330i fit on the m54 e53?
The reason I ask is because I'd like a little more throaty roar from the engine when I put my foot down.

The e46 intake boot has no resonator box whereas the e39 and e53 intake boots have one (to reduce engine noise).

Has anyone done this?

Also the e53 intake boot is about £30 more expensive and I don't intend to hack it it bits when I can just bolt one straight on! Lol.

I wouldn't want to mess with anything that will mess with the intake resonance as it could throw off the balance that is performed with the DISA valve. If you are referring to the scoop behind the radiator that would be far less likely to be a problem. The intake boot between the MAF and intake manifold I wouldn't mess with that.

I could be wrong, but I don't see how anything before the DISA valve can effect the operation of the DISA valve, up to and until you add forced induction. Then, DISA is a problem. If you do not modify the function of the throttle body, I don't think you can drastically change the characteristics of the airflow past the DISA.

DISA adjusts the length of the intake runners based on the MAF and throttle sensor, or some derivation of that. There are no MAP sensors on early M54...so pressure or "balance" isn't really a thing, I shouldn't think.

The hard plastic "intake muffler" on the E53 mates to the air cleaner in a different direction and at a different height than the rubber "upper intake boot" on the E46. The diams are prob the same, but I doubt this is going to work.

Bit the bullet and got the e46 intake. Fitted perfectly and sounds a lot better

Yeah you probably could but I had to replace mine as the boot has a nice big tear in it.

I think a pvc cap some silicone sealant and a hose clamp would do the trick

Can you post a picture of your new e46 intake? Would love to see the fitment

You didn't happen to measure the ID of the connector that goes over the throttlebody, did you?
