Bluetooth help!!!
Here is my issue, I have researched this forums, all other forums, even searched google, I am stuck.
I have a X5 2003 pre wired for bluetooth. I installed the telematics module. However this module has a phone in its memory I can not pair maine nor delete the one in the module. I tried everything from pulling the fuse to attemp to pair my phone. I never get the option to pair mine, however if I press the speaking face on the steering wheel it invokes the old verizon phone, rings but a message from Verizon tells me will transfer me because the phone is has no service. Does anybody know how can I reset the telematics module to delete all phones? This telematics does not show a PK number on its label either... what gives??? Thank you. |
UPDATE
Ok, After leaving the module in the car for 24 hours I now have a red light on the phone button. The old Verizon phone in the TCU has been automatically removed.
Yesterday when I was able to view the menu I saw signal strength 100% so, I am assuming I have an antenna. The issue now, is how to add my phone to the car. I have researched these forums and other forums the instructions by pressing the talking face on the steering wheel does not work. No matter what I do my phone does not see the BMW. Does anybody know how to solve this issue? Thank you. |
Not enough info to be of help. What is the part nbr of the TCU you installed?
The 2003 X5 didn't come with BT capability...it had to be added as an accessory/option...and at that time, I think it required more than pressing the "talk/speak" button. Depending on if you had a telephone installed...it would require pressing the button on the phone's cradle. If you have the newer TCU that was used in the 10/04-up e53s that came with the premium package or BMW assist...to pair a new device only required turning the ignition to KL R (ignition position 1) or KL 15 (ignition position 2)...which opens a 2 minute window to pair your smartphone. Here's a direct link to a reply I made yesterday which has a bit more detail about BT pairing if you have the newer TCU: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...7#post29751427 |
Bluetooth
This is one of the TCU I plugged in.
I have two. On this one, I get a message (phone connected?) The other TCU I have , I will post pictures later, is the one that had a Verizon phone in it. No matter what I do, my phone does not see BMW available to connect to it. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rtfkfrrks...y4hpOj2-vi.jpg |
Again, an 11 digit BMW part nbr would be helpful (ignore the previous sentence...the images you posted are not visible on my work CPU...their URL address apparently do NOT meet the net nanny's standards).
Not all TCUs were BT capable. See the info below...and note the text highlighted in yellow...there were TCUs produced between 3/04-8/04 and installed in multiple BMW models that did NOT support BT: |
Bluetooth
I thought the label would show part number. Where would the part number be?
I find intriguing if this TCU is not Bluetooth compatible if it has a PK code right on it. |

After that, the module will hold something like 5 or 6 phones. I was only able to add my last phone when the TCU was cleared with GT1/equivalent. I have had a new phone since then and it will not pair either. After the experience with a replacement head unit in my wife's E46, I am done messing with the stock E53 radio parts. |
Quote:
Now that I'm on my phone...I can see the pic...the 11 digit BMW part number is 84 11 6 946 993 & the build date is 6/10/04 ...which falls within the date range of TCUs that do not support BT (as mentioned in the posted article of BMWs that incorrectly suggested they did support BT...but actually do not . Look for a TCU with build date of 10/04-up. If you click the link below...you can see a long list of TCUs that support BT in the part nbr index below the diagram (see items for #1)...the list contains current & no longer produced nbrs. ... but can still be found in the used market...again, look for dates used from Oct 2004-up: |

Maybe the BMW Telematics Control Unit gurus can help me here.
My 2004 X5 had a problem with the TCU causing a battery drain on my X5 so I pulled the fuse 73 in the back. It had BMW assist but the Bluetooth never worked as I my X5 falls under the 2004 non BT build. So if I want to replace my TCU and get Bluetooth working, is there a specific TCU for BMW Assist and Bluetooth I should look for? I should point out I do not necessarily need the BMW Assist, but I am having a hard time determining if it matters in the hardware replacement for my chassis. |

Well I will try the one listed out of a 2008 and see how it goes. The one I am trying is 84109171348. I see some claims that is is compatible with BMW 2004-2012. For $50, no real loss if it doesn't work.

Again, if you click the link in post #8...you can compile a list of multiple BT module's 11 digit part numbers that can be used to shop with...and you'll also know those part numbers will fit/work for your model's application. Regarding BMW ASSIST...the most crucial need for having it installed would be the built-in microphone in the headliner panel that facilitates Voice Commands & the ability to answer & make hands free calls. |

If the number you posted is not listed...then paste it into the part number search box at the top of the linked pageand you can see which bmw models it was installed in. There's no need to waste time & money for a part that may be for new gen BMWs with iDrive. Just because it says it fits a BMW between 2004-2012...doesn't mean it includes the e53. There are multiple models with the newer communication busses (IDrive) like the e60/e65/e90 that were new gen BMWs that started production during the same time the old gen e53 was coming to the end of production. You need MODEL numbers...not just build date numbers on sites like eBay that may not have complete details/info. Again, 2004-2006 BMW fitment may be totally correct...but totally wrong if referring to an e53 X5 vs an e60 5 series BMW. :) |

There are 24 part nbrs at this link: Single parts SA 639, trunk | BMW X5 E53 X5 4.4i N62 USA
All of them are listed as (#1)...some are no longer available (new) but are out there in the used market...but all will work for e53 owners. Shop for a BMW TCU using ANY of those 24 part nbrs...and it will give you results for a TCU that is plug-n-play. TCUs with a build date printed on them prior to 10/04...will probably not have what you need. And if you shop for a TCU from a new gen BMW (like an e60/e65/e70/e71/etc)...they may not be compatible since they were designed to communicate on the (I believe) MOST bus which our e53s do NOT have. I can't verify if the TCUs designed for the new gen BMWs will work (someone please chime in if you know for sure)...but with the ability to quickly find out which BMW models are listed for a part nbr using the database...I'd personally stick with the multitude of part nbrs listed as being compatible and exchangeable for the e53. Good luck. :) |

Yes, that one should work.
I was putting the info below together as you were posting the information above. Hopefully it can be helpful to others that are reading this thread...or may come across it in a future search. The label on the TCU should give enough info to determine if it's compatible with your BMW. The older generation BMWs (like the e39/e38/e53) communicates telephone/bluetooth data over the I-bus. The newer generation BMWs (like the e60/e65/e70) communicates telephone/bluetooth data over the MOST bus...and this info should be visible on the TCU's label. The two pics below shows a TCU designed for the MOST bus...and the other a TCU designed for the I-Bus: |

I have been toying with the idea of adding a TCU to my '05 3.0d but given that I'd need a TCU, a microphone, a BT aerial (at least) and other items as yet unknown, the cost could get quite high!
I think I'll just enjoy the peace of a quiet drive without the interruptions from work! :D |

As I need to get DIS up and running (I only have INPA and NCS so far) so I can do a unicorn juice change in my transfer case and the TCG adaptation reset, I guess adding a TCU/BT option would be another reason to get this working. I guess the coding can be done in NCE Expert but I don't want to screw with this to much. I have done a bit of research on the TCU - but this thread has removed some the smoke from the scene! Originally considered just the older BT unit (non-TCU) but it's even more messing around in a car with nothing installed, due to the need for the phone cradle etc. Seems the TCU might be a bit simpler - just the TCU, BT aerial, microphone and some coding. I think... |

So it isn't so bad. I just need to sort all the mechanical stuff first. Not that I HAVE any real big issues - just sayin'. |
Thanks for all your help Qsilver7. Installed my new fleaBay TCU and everything seems to be working. Paired my phone and my wife's with no problem. Even the voice command is working properly. Opened up PA Soft 1.4 and programmed the proper VIN and cleared all the errors and hoping we are all good to go.
I am still a little concerned about the parasitic drain that my X5 had with the old TCU that was solved by pulling fuse 74. I will be watching the shift indicator over the next few days to see if the iBus wakes up the system and draining the battery like it did before. Fingers crossed. |
Great...I'm glad it worked out for you...and so do appreciate the update to the thread.
One request I do hope you consider...and that would be to add your vehicle info (model/model year/build date) to a permanent signature. I'm sure someone will be searching for this same info in the future...and may follow your same path. But knowing the info you have missing can also help them in knowing any extra things they may need to look for/look out for. :) |

Everything seemed to be working for a day but last night before going to bed, I checked on the X5 in the garage and the system was awake. It had been at least 6 hours since I parked it so there should have been no reason it should have woke up. I pulled the codes from the TCU with BMW Scanner PA Soft 1.4 and posted the screenshot below. I did clear the codes and they came back empty but checked it again today after running errands and both are back. My first thoughts are the replacement TCU I got off fleaBay has the same issue my last TCU did (if that is actually the problem). However, the odds are stacked against 2 identical issues with 2 separate TCU modules. I read on a previous post of yours from several years ago where you listed fuse 74 destinations:
So, any advise on checking these other devices that may randomly wake the system up and cause the NAD Transceiver Failure or did I just match the odds of winning the lottery and get another failed TCU? I did disconnect the 2 devices I have on the iBus that are not OEM BMW (Dice and ModLight2) so I am still diagnosing. Again, everything is working perfect with the Bluetooth, voice command and TCU so I am not sure why is lists a TCU failure. Any thoughts would truly be appreciated. |
Hi guys,
I snagged the microphone, antenna and BT module (03/03/2006, part number 9 120 843) so all should work. Checked all front and rear fuses and they seem ok, but buttons on radio and wheel do nothing. I tried connecting via GT1 and INPA and can't seem to. Overboost, what programming was required to activate the module? I think I have NCS Expert, but not sure I ever fired it up or got it talking. Advice appreciated. Thanks! |

Nothing pops up during with ignition on. Tried with 2 phones.
When I connected with INPA, I could connect to the radio, but not the TCU. In the radio, "telephone-mute" was active if that helps. But with GT1 or INPA I couldn't see the TCU. I have the massive multi-pin connector and one of the other decoupled connectors attached to the module. One other connector to the antenna. |
Quote:
|
And it should be the large multi-pin connector that allows comms to it, correct?
|
Quote:

I visually did last night and just went and tested the one front and two rear fuses. All good. Re-seated connectors too. Might be a bad module. I might see if my indy can connect or wipe/reset. Not hopeful though. I've tried two software packages and neither can communicate.
I wonder, seeing as mine is an early 2004 build, that maybe I have to plug something in up front? Every other option I've added has worked (heated rears, heated steering, etc.) |
Now was the TCU manufacture on the 6th day, 10 month of 2004, or did they follow our method of registering calendar day, 6th month, 10th day of 2004? If they follow our calendar standard the TCU does not have Bluetooth.
|
03.03.2006 is printed on it. I looked through the reference list others provided and got as late an IBUS one that I could find on the lists. 10 9 120 843 is part.
|
Check for 12V on pins 9 and 18 on the TCU that come from Fuse 74.

Thanks for the diagrams. I have power at fuse 74, but no power on 9, 18 or 1 on the connector. I'll have to get daylight to dig further behind the panels. Something isn't making it to the connector.
|
|
Would the battery drain issue be fixed by installing a MOST loopback connector?
