Canadian Option Code 838
 

I'm looking into a 4.8is but it's located in Canada. I noticed the VIN lookup mentions Option Code 838 - Canadian version.

I did attempt to search but was unable to find any details on this.

Anyone here have experience importing a Canadian E53 to the USA? Are there any things that will need to be changed? I'm guessing the instrument cluster might.

Not only the instrument cluster...but it will need coding to change kilometer & liter calculations to miles and gallons.

The 838 Canadian Version option code...is just a simple way for anything required by the government of Canada or pre-selected by BMW Canada for vehicles will be coded to the car to be active or installed. For instance, BMW USA cancels the convenience remote window roll up feature :rolleyes: ...but do allow us to access the feature if we manually insert the key into the driver's door lock cylinder...but for convenience open...we get the feature on the remote key and the manual operation of inserting the key into the door.

Off the top of my head & with my limited knowledge of Canadian vehicle coding:

• Cluster w/kilometer markings
• Kilometers
• Liters
• DDL/DRL headlights (mandatory)
• Any special options pre-determined by BMW Canada for a model

What coder would you recommend for the conversion from Can to US?

Would you happen to know if that is just one bit I need to switch or will there be multiple bits that need to be switched?
