Dead battery / Jump / Steering Angle Error / Alarm Error
 

Hi All,

2016 X5 E53 3.0 150,000 miles has been doing daily duty on my 100 mile daily commute with few issues. Many control arms replaced, but not much else for years.

Last week my daughter went out to the car to charge her phone while I sat and got my semi annual teeth cleaning. 50 minutes later I came out to a dead battery. She turned the key on but didn't start the car.

Got a AAA portable jump and have had nothing but problems since. I've been through this a few years ago with the trifecta, but that was cleared up with a battery replacement.

DCS is off with Carly showing an error code of 005BE00: Steering Angle Sensor - Internal Fault. DCS only, not trifecta.

The security alarm goes off unless I double click when locking.

Yesterday I replaced the battery with the exact same battery, neither of the errors are clearing.

I ran Carly code diagnoses and cleared all codes. The DCS will not clear, security alarm still going off.

Right after clearing codes I did the Steering Angle reset thing by turning steering wheel to lock left and then all the way to lock right and back to center. The DCS does not clear.

Since I suspect the alarm is related to angle positioning as is the steering, I wondered if there is a reset I have not done that would help?

If your steering angle sensor is bad, there's no resetting it. You need to replace it. After it is replaced it has to be programmed. Had to do this on my X last year. Sounds like your SAS has gone south.

Thank you for replying Fifty150hs. I'm pulling the steering angle sensor this weekend to clean, test and replace if needed. Curious what you read in my description that indicates the SAS is bad.

Exact same symptom and code when mine failed. I wouldn't count on being able to clean yours and reinstall. I took my old one apart after replacing it and it was pretty worn out. Plus if cleaning it doesn't work you'll be taking it apart again and that is not a fun job.

WAIT! STOP! DON'T DO ANYTHING!

Start the engine and turn the steering wheel to full lock to one side, then full lock to the other side, then back to center.

Your steering angle sensor is not broken, it's only lost. Turn the wheel to full lock, then full lock to the opposite side. It will figure out where it is and the light will go out.


Never mind. When I replaced my battery, I had the lights come on and I fixed them by turning the steering wheel full lock. Turn from lock to lock without stopping.

I figured the "Internal Error" part was not a good sign. I'll pull it and have a look. Very odd that the alarm goes off as well. I understand it's another angle sensor. The one that senses when the car is lifted to be towed. Odd both are angle sensors that showed no issues prior.
