Just found out that I got a crack hose on my engine
as shown in the picture, I found out that a hose near the engine firewall is cracked. Does anyone know what this hose function?
According to my evaluation; replacing this hose would be extremely difficult, because the other connection of the hose is located so far behind the engine. Any suggestion on how to replace this hose? Thanks |

woops I forgot to post the picture. here it is
http://azev.home.comcast.net/crackhose.jpg I dont think its a coolant hose, because no coolant are showing anywhere near the cracked hose. I think its some sort of vacuum hose. There is another hose right near the cracked hose, this hose is also in a bad condition ( it is very soft and mushy ). |
Yes, there are 2 of them about 30mm dia. They tend to soften and thin with age. My dealer noticed it happening on mine before I read about them here on this website. Definitely should be on the preventative maintenance list at 50K miles. Like the water pump after 70K (though I read in Bimmer magazine, one of the advisors said he did his every 60K)

duct tape?

I thought about duct tape, and I actually got a special hose duct tape from GI Joes. I dont know though, I really want to replace this hose instead of just a patching it with a duct tape. I am a pretty good DIY'er, but before I start working on it, I'd like to know what it takes to replace this hose. Does anyone here ever attemp to do this on their own?

they are coolant hoses

hmmmm, if they are coolant lines, why are they so dry and there are no sign of coolant being passed through that line? I've been running my truck without the engine accoustic plastic, and I saw not a single drop of coolant out of that lines.
I went to research realoem.com, and the closest thing that I found about these hoses are this picture: http://azev.home.comcast.net/61.png If the hoses no 4,5 are the right hose, these are part of the crankcase-ventilation/oil seperator. (not sure what these do) |
