2004 X5 - Possible Steering Sensor Issue

Hi guys,

I was hoping to pick some brains over an issue I'm having!

I don't really know the background to the issue, but I recently got an X5 that had the '4x4' light on. I managed to get INPA to work, and read the codes to find this:

Code:

Ecu    : D_0012      SYS-0012: IDENTIFICATION ERROR
====================================================================================
Variant: LWS5_1B      1 Error in error memory
    Error registration 1 :  0x0004: 90 degrees difference of wiper too large (Adjustment operation)    <<<<!!!
Error accurances: 31

    Static error
Error code:  04 3F 21

I cleared it, then the light went out after a short drive, only to return again shortly after.

From this point, I did my best to look at the sensor readings:

Does anyone have any experience on telling me if anything is abnormal? The 'wiper voltages' (pic2) change when the wheel is moved, but the steering angle reading (pic3) does not.

Should the 'wiper' voltages be the same? I have a spare used SAS that I thought might be useful to swapping the 'wipers' over on (I have read a thread that suggested that one might break, and this can be done to avoid the adaptation?).

I'm trying to figure out the best next step - all help is appreciated!
