AFE intake installed on 4.8

Recieved and installed my AFE intake for my 4.8

With the hood open and gently stepping on the gas, you can hear the "wooshing" sound as it sucks up air. While driving at full throttle after 4rpm it seems like there is a deeper engine note, but it could be just me because the 4.8 with the resonators removed is soo loud its almost possible to hear anything else.

I want to do a little mod and that is, get something that can cut metal and cut a little section out of the heat shield at the bottom. ... Now before you guys think im crazy, the reason for this is because there is a tube that comes from the lower part of the front bumper that also delievers air into the intake area, but the heat shield covers that. I think that if that tube was open and could have room to breathe the intake might get more air.
(check out the pic, the part that is circled is where the tube is sitting coverd by the heat shield)

Good point! I'll have to crack open my cold air intake and see.

i decided that cutting it would be a pain in the ass, so ijust took the tube thats under the intake and kind of "force" pulled it towards an opening in the shield, so now it looks like this kinda outta place but i dunno, im leanin towards the "more air" route if u know what i mean:confused:

next thing you know, we'll be adding those 'ram air scoops' to our hood like in the '60's:wow: :dunno: :bustingup  :bustingup

how much hp in ur 4.8 ?

do u recommend removing the resonators ? is that loud noise nice ? .. more info please (can u share a soundclip) :)

thanx.

I have the tube positioned the same way, I tried removing it but that wasn't happening.:)

Kuwaitiano, I have the resonator removed on my 4.8 and I enjoy the added exhaust note. I do not have a sound clip but doing a search should pull up a couple. There were a few threads discussing the different exhaust options.

Why don't you guys just go to your local machine shop. I did a similar mod on my 850R and they charged me $20 to cut a nice clean hole in a piece of sheet metal, then even added some of that instant gasket maker to go around the edge.

The intake looks good.

I wonder if that tube that you pulled up was actually the front brake cooling vent. Not sure, I should look at mine. :D

That tube connects to the bottom of the stock intake box.

hmmmm cool, that was quick  So does anyone know what the tube does?? Maybe then it feeds the air pump???? Just have to be careful with which tube you pull. :)

jpm4.8is 01-31-2006 03:21 PM

The other end of the tube is connected to a box that behind a portion of the grille in the front bumper. It gives a sort of ram air effect at speed.

ya the tube comes from the bumper and connects to the stock airbox

crosvs 03-24-2006 01:00 PM

so...... that tube is sort of an auxiliary air inlet? so TECHNICALLY it doesn't matter *WHAT* it's attached to, right? but obviously if i could have it pointing at the filter, that would be ideal, yes? Hm perhaps I'll just go to my local hardware store and buy some piping and attach it to make it reach :)

I'm thinking about installing this too on my X - i've had her for less than a year. WOuld installation of the AFE void my warranty??

Kewl X5 03-24-2006 02:41 PM

Yes, I wrote an article last year on how to install the AFE intake on a X5 3.0i.

Check it out here: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/e...d-x5-3-0i.html
