2001 4.4 starting issue, died while running

For a few weeks, about 1 out of 50 cranks, the starter would run on, but the engine wouldn’t start.

Yesterday, the engine started fine, drove about 4 miles and the car shuttered under light acceleration (30mph). I felt it happen, turned into a gas station within 100’ of the incident. Car died as I completed my turn. Coasted to a pump and started troubleshooting.

Fuel pump fuse fine
Schrader valve pissing fuel
Pumps appear (by touch and vibration) to be functioning.

After filling the tank (since I was there....) I attempted to crank again. The starter ran strong, the engine rough started at about 500rpm and then the starter jumped back in on its own. I shut it down with key, tried several times and was able to get same shitty start with starter interrupt.

Bled the Schrader valve on top fuel rail, (no air)
Rather than wear out the starter I had it towed home.

I tried it again this morning, Just starter....no idle. Almost acts like an immobilizer issue, but why would it die while in motion? Sounds like fuel delivery, but no inop components I can find.

Main fuel pump (new) last spring ‘17
Pressure regulator (new) last spring ‘17
Fuel filter (new) last spring ‘17
Battery (BMW NEW) fall ‘16
New Key programmed Feb ‘16
Airbag recall performed last spring 17’

Have not done any other diagnostics. I did perform a scan, NO CODES PRESENT, I have NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT.

GIVE ME SOMETHING TO CHECK?!!

You can check if the immobilizer is interfering with most of the BMW scanners out there. Although on all the BMW’s I’ve ever seen with immobilizer issues, they wouldn’t crank at all. Can you scan data from your crank/cam sensors? Presuming you have the proper fuel pressure (don’t assume because its there, that it’s enough) you now have to confirm spark & then compression.

I’ll add it to the list.

Tomorrow is check-day....
so I’ll take all the advice I can get.

Thanks!!
