another thought....

Just another small thought....
Before I cured my alternator problem by getting rid of oil leaks, I had a multi-meter hooked up so that I could monitor the battery voltage at all times.
I could see that when I started in the morning, the voltage would be critically low and then after about 6kms it would begin to charge.

Now I am wondering if overnight, oil would leak into the alternator causing it not to charge in the mornings and all current was coming from the battery, thus giving the low readings. Then after driving for a short distance the oil was thrown off by centrifugal force, and at that point the alternator was able to supply current to the system once again.

Monitor the voltage real-time with hidden menu 7 I believe. If you don't get 13.5 immediately after start and it won't hold constant at all RPM then the alternator is failed, it cold be as simple of fix as cleaning the commutator but it needs to be fixed.

The pic shows an air cooled alternator the water cooled alternators you can't see into them but also being completely enclosed they also are impervious to oil penetration.

One other thought is that a bad starter can pull over double the normal current and kill a battery pretty easily. I have not figured out exactly where to take a reading to get a baseline measurement for current reading with a simple multimeter but it is possible. Any voltage measured from 12v on the low drain loop to the jump point under the hood will give you a scale of the current to the starter
