Transmission issue

My 2005 3.0d E53 auto is making rumbling noises in 1st and 2nd gears and also thuds and thumps before changing into 3rd when all then becomes normal. In addition in 1st when pulling away the car pulls strongly to the left. I am at a loss to understand whether this is an autobox or transfer case fault. Does anybody have any ideas please?[emoji848]

If the car pulls to one side, its a diff or CV axle issue. Or your brakes are sticking. The gearbox may or may not have issues but that doesn't make the car pull to one side.

Thanks for that, I was thinking dif - I discounted brakes as under hard acceleration on a damp road recently the car shimmied/swerved to the left and corrected when I lifted off.

lift both axles and rotate wheels to find the one that has no effect on the opposite side... Id bet for front left but might be rear...

Problem has been diagnosed as transfer case. Removing fuse 46 stopped the symptoms and car drives normally but without benefit of drive to front dif, dsc, or abs. Organising repair.
