^That's true. It's always the rubber surround. I have yet to see the bearing itself fail on any BMW's. But I have seen it completely separate from the rubber surround.

That's very helpful feedback. I do have to check the dif but I suspect it's just the one last bearing I didn't replace

Lots of what you described sounds like subframe bushings. Especially freeway thump from the rear.

Example: a distinct thump if on power up hill and hit a bridge expansion bump. Every time I'll get a thump that feels like a gear slipping a tooth. E.g. Instantly loose power and get it back.

The twist of the subframe does exactly that: for a split second when the car gets light on the spring power goes to twisting the subframe not pushing the car forward.

I also get a creak every time I start accelerating from zero as the subframe twists.

It happens even on smooth roads. But I'm assuming its drivetrain related because it sounds rotational. I'll try to have a look at the subframe bushings as well.

Note: your clunk sounds more like a rear bushing, just suggesting the above as part of maintenance.

About 146k. This is good to know. Might go this route if I can't find an issue. Did you change auto/diff/tc fluids on yours? I was thinking of it but have been reading mixed results.

I have not done that as of yet... but all of those on the list of "to dos" for the upcoming year.

I just changed the TF on my '04 4.4 n62 and wow what a difference. I use to get a loud thud and kick from the back end at lower speeds when slowing down and hitting the gas again. Small thumps are gone as well. I was hesitant as well being at 150k and never having done any tranny maintenance. Car shifts smoother than ever now.

How many miles have you put on it since the fluid change?
