Check Engine oil level 05 4.8is
 
Why in the world would BMW check engine oil level come on so late ? I was driving home on my way to work when my check engine oil level Came on drove maybe 10 miles before I stopped and checked Oil. It was bone dry . I was so pissed . Thought maybe it would have came on sooner like at least the half way mark . And I know part of it's my fault I should check every time I gas up I know better. But wtf!!!! I obviously filled it up asap. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Yep, it drove me crazy too. After having it for nearly 3 years, I learned how much oil it went through and always kept some on hand.

Explain "bone dry"? On my wife's 3.0i, if the light comes on it takes less than a quart to get well into the min-max range and two quarts will hit the max line.

No Oil on the dipstick whatsoever . I add maybe A quart and a half

So when you're light comes on how much oil does it read on the dipstick I'm thinking maybe my oil level sensor is bad

When light comes on it takes 1/2 qt to wet the bottom of the dip stick.

The 3.0i capacity is about 8qt so I'm maybe 1.5 low by the time the light comes on that is less then 20%. It would be similar to 1qt low on 5 qt system.

The best way for my car to know when the oil is getting low is to time how many seconds for the oil light to go out on a cold start. Along with that, the engine will tick for a few seconds. When the tick lasts more than ten seconds I know it's time to add oil.

My M3 yellow "low oil" light comes on as soon as the level is at the lower mark on the dip stick. Sometimes right before it actually.
My previous non M E46 was the same way too.
Now you're making me curious about the 4.8

Mine doesn't burn much oil, if any, but I do check it from time to time.
So just wondering if I should be checking more often. I guess I should. Can't hurt.
