E53 X5 COMPRESSOR

A few days ago my X5 A/C still work (when the car is moving I get cold air blowing out of the vents but if I stop at the traffic the cool air stop and start blowing warm air) As I found the condenser fan is dead and I drove it to my local repairer. Christmas is near and the local repairer called me a few day later and tell me to pick up the car as the part won't be delivered until early Jan 2018.

When I picked up my car and I've found my car is with AC ON AND FULL BLAST. On my way home the a/c never blow any cool air even the car is on the highway.

:iagree:I assumed the condenser fan was dead when the repairer tried to locate the problem and let the car idle in his garage and use the full blast A/C (MAX) and damaged the A/C compressor?:iagree:

:(I have tried to turn on the A/C and couldn't hear any clicks sound from the engine bay. But the compressor motor is rotating. After I drove the car with the A/C on for about 10 mins, I touch the high-pressure pipe but it's not hot at all.

:thumbup:AT LAST THANK YOU ALL. AND SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH.

You might want to take it to a pro with the machine that can test the system pressure, the mechanic might have bled the system before changing the condenser that never got there.

Thanks for your suggestion.I just want to know if it's the repairer broke the compressor by open the A/C up high when the car is idle with a dead AUX FAN. But anyway I still have to wait for a month till the part to arrive.

you don't know its even broken, if there's no pressure in the system, I'm quite sure some safety system would prevent it from running.

Thanks, I have to wait for The BM Workshop professional repairer to find out then. It's my bad, I shouldn't take my car to a local repairer at first. I should have wait until 16th Jan 2018 for the BM Workshop appointment.

I live in New Zealand, I've to drive my car without A/C in this bloody hot Christmas.

The AC compressor won't kick on for a bunch of different reasons to prevent damage to the system.

The AC doesn't require the electric fan to operate but the engine will overheat much easier without the fan running.

I have a feeling the system was coincidentally low on "freon" and possibly now it's low enough that it won't turn on.

You could have the pressure tested and some R134a added if that's the cause of your AC not engaging. (Any competent mechanic could do this)

As you've figured out the AC does not need the secondary fan when the car is moving at over about 50kph

If you think it may be low on gas, as suggested by andrewwynn, then you could try one of these...

CRC AC Charge Refill & Hose - 400g - Supercheap Auto

DIY Air Conditioning Recharge Kit | Welcome to Coolkiwi Automotive Enhancements

Might get your system running, at least while you are travelling. It'll still be a problem in traffic with no aux. fan.

Glad you sorted it. Where did you get a new aux. fan from? They can be $$!

Here's the parts listing for the lateral bumper mounts (part #4): -

The one I bought as $100 new but it was in the usa so it might cost a bunch to ship elsewhere.

Crowz 01-03-2018 05:13 PM

Oh and has a lifetime warranty too.

Oh, I know they are readily available at reasonable cost in the USA and freight isn't too bad but as the OP is local to me in NZ, I am curious as to how they sourced a replacement. Local prices are just stupid...

Not everything is that bad - a genuine oil filter from the dealer is $50 - but for some reason these Hella or Behr aux fans are just silly money.

There are cheaper no-name brand options ($500) but the description doesn't exactly fill me with confidence...

Sweeet view.

Wife and I are thinking of going there for vacation one day. We were talking about that a few days ago.

Probably do a cruise since I doubt I could get myself to fly now. I would end up killing an TSA agent with my temper :)

Just some things in life get to me and from the stories I read online and vids I have seen I don't think I would do well at a tsa screening.

Plus smoking on a cruise ship has got to be easier than on a plane.

Just did a Carnival cruise and only a small section on the pool deck and the casino were smoker friendly. They even had an issue with my vaping outside of the designated smoking areas. Make sure to get a cabin with a balcony and you will be good to go...

Haha... I know what you mean about the TSA - I recently flew to Toronto and went via Auckland and Vancouver, just to avoid the TSA....

I see the Queen Elizabeth sails from SF to Auckland - 19 days, not bad! Better than the time it took my ancestors to get here (3-4 months, from England, in the 1860's).

BTW, you haven't lived until you stand in a full body scanner with hundreds of other passengers all looking on.

Part of my life every week unfortunately. Going through the TSA dramas in the morning headed to Daytona for the weekend testing. Best thing for US citizens is to register for the TSA Pre-Check and Clear. Makes the mess a little easier to endure...

I think they are about $80 each from the dealers here. Might want to look around a little! :yikes:
