is this Eccentric Shaft Sensor broken normal?

Hi,

My wife's 04 N62 4.4 is having the valve cover gasket and upper timing gasket replace in the shop. the shop found both the Eccentric Shaft Sensors are broken. the guy told me he has to clean up in the engine to pick up all the broken plastic pieces. I know it is common to crack the sensor during the valve cover job. but judging on the pictures, it seems like normal wear and tears? There are no code or any Enge lights on the Dash/cluster. The enge was running rough/viberate around 2.7k RPM to 3K rpm but Dealer said it is motor mount during the brake service. (I was having my front brake replacement at the dealer as they carry the BMW value service. $605 for whole front brakes labor + BMW parts)

That is absolutely not normal and clearly broken. Do you know the vehicle repair history? Those parts cost $700+. Now who broke them? Yeah, the bits and pieces will need to be extracted - I broke one of them during my valve cover gasket replacement ;).

It now has 83K miles and we own it since back in 06 when it had 27k miles and still under warranty. Never have the engine open up before until now. Yes the question is who broken them. From the picture, it doesn't look like broken recently? I guess should I question my shop? BTW, I check ECS, the VDO is only $239 a piece when BMW one is $450. That's a big difference. should I just get the VDO?
