Well shit. Wish I saw this before I ordered the VAG cable and 20-pin OBDI round to 16-pin OBDII trapezoidal adapter.

Are you saying if i bridge pins 17/20 in the round connector under the hood with a piece of wire (do I need to close it back up) I can use my KCAN cable on the 16 pin OBD2 in-cabin to access all modules?

Yes, this is my understanding from my research. I have a later X5 so I don't have the 20 pin DLC under the hood. I believe the cap will connect pin 20 to pin 2 so you may need to connect all 3. pins 2, 17 and 20 without the cap.

On a second note, if this were my X5, I would get the proper cable just like you did and avoid jumper wires. Just my OCD.

Oh man I love you right now. Definitely going to try this out. ASAP.

For some reason I thought the in-cabin OBD2 16 pin diagnostics port does not work if the 20-pin OBD round pin diagnostics port is open / connected. Is it really pass through? That's cool if it is and they can both be connected simultaneously...

I guess I ordered another $15 in cables for no reason :/

Racer2086 over on the e38 forum @ BimForums...shows how he connected the pins (IN THE LID) which allows you to screw it back on.

You are connecting it to the OBD connector in the center console right?

I had the same problem, and it's because they only wired the OBD port to the DME and EGS. You have to jump two pins in the diagnostic cap to connect the diagnostic line that runs to the OBD connector to the diagnostic line for the rest of the car.

Here's a pic of mine:

And a thread regarding this:

I think I jumped different pins because it was easier to solder the wire. Either way, the way I jumpered it works, and nothing has fried :)

Thats cool might do that. I never looked under the cap before last night and the first thing I thought about was if I could bridge them there lol.

Here is what a tried:

1) Remove round diag plug cap 20-pin OBDI cap under hood
2) Confirmed in-cabin diag plug 16-pin OBDII port no longer connecting via KCAN cable
3) Bridged pins 17 & 2 on round diag plug cap 20-pin OBDI cap under hood - confirmed in-cabin diag plug 16-pin OBDII port now connecting via KCAN cable (still only engine and trans modules)
4) Bridged pins 20 & 2 on round diag plug cap 20-pin OBDI cap under hood - confirmed in-cabin diag plug 16-pin OBDII port still connecting via KCAN cable (all modules available!)

Again my cable is the cheap generic silver K+CAN 16-pin OBDII FTDI 232R with the white motherboard (pins 7 & 8 bridged).

Really nice to be able to use the full software now for INPA and DIS.

The only module I can't connect to in INPA/DIS is EHC... which is what I am having problems with and need to connect to for diagnosis. Receiving "IFH-009 No response from module" error. I think the EHC unit for SLS has gone bad :/

Thanks everyone here for your help tho I really reall appreciate it.

Just noticed how they did the solder. Pretty smart!

Got my Chinese 20 pin to 16 pin adapter. Works. I did the cap pin hack so I can have my surface in the cabin while driving. Got a RAM mount that bolts to the passenger seat rail. Debating soldering the wire or not. First will make sure it works (it should).
