Coolant level sensor connector
Hi i bought my truck used and when i was changing the radiator i noticed the harness that normally goes to the expansion tank for the coolant level was missing. The sensor is on the expansion tank and it looks like it has been changed previously but no wire?? I have worked on a lot of M54 engines and have never seen this wire missing. its usually hanging right there! can anyone tell me if this is normal for the 2001 3.0 later version?

Pretty sure it's not there. My 01 doesn't have it. I just eyeball the float in the expansion tank.

- Check realoem dot com to see what it says.
- My 2006 X5 M54 has the electrical connector. |
I think some of the replacement expansion tanks come with the sensor regardless if you have the connector for it. I have same situation although mine is a facelift '04.

I have one of the last 2001 3.0i's, built in July 2001. It has the high tech cluster. I do have the coolant level sensor. The wires for it come out of the fat bundle of wires going to the ABS unit right near the bottom of the coolant tank. So the 2 wires from where they leave the bundle to the sensor at the tank is about 4 inches.
It seems like some E53's had the sensor, some did not. For the 3.0i's, it could be the high tech cluster that determines this. Not sure. This was discussed in the following recent thread: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...l-coolant.html I agree it would make sense if all the replacement tanks have the sensor - cheaper to put it in all of them than to manage two different part numbers. |
We tried to determine what combination had or didn't have the sensor connected. I think it was if you have the high cluster you get the sensor active

Thanks for all your help. My cluster is basic like what was in my 99 323i

My reading indicates low cluster, no sensor wiring. High cluster has the wiring.
