possible fuel pump?
 

So as I stand here by the road waiting for a tow. I think the fuel pump on my 01 3.0 X5 went out. Came to the light and it just shuts off. Crank it up and it ran for a second and then shut off. Then it just cranks over. I notice I don't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key on either.

Sound about right? I don't see a check engine light either. But not much I can do until I get home so figured I would get people's wheels turning with a post. Man it's cold out here.

Either that or you are out of gas.

Don't spray starting fluid or brake clean into airbox to determine if it's a fuel issue, because the hot wire in the maf can be damaged if the fluid lands on the hot wire or you can get a backfire when the hot wire ignites the mixture.

Almost full tank of gas. Do you have to drop the tank or is there an access panel?

Access panel underneath the rear seat. The fuel pump is on the passenger side (LHD) of the car. I would siphon some of the gas out of the tank before starting the work.

Where is the fuel filter located?

Under the car and it's a bitch to get to. Dumbest fuel filter location ever.

Awesome. Watching a YouTube video on it now. Car has 177k on it so even if fuel pump is the issue I will replace this as well. Why would they put the fuel pressure regulator on the stupid filter and put it there!?

Fuel pump! Purrs like a kitten now. Damn that oring though. I fought for 45 minutes before realizing it needs to slip over the tank gasketto seat right haha

The fuel pump in my '01 3.0i went out at 173k miles, luckily right in front of my house. So your mileage is right on target.
Part number for the pump is 16-11-6-755-043 (pump only - not the plastic assembly around it)
Pierburg was the original supplier for this pump. Now owned by TI Automotive. Seem to be sold by Bosch as well. Cost should be around $120-$180.

Fuel filter is 13-32-1-709-535. I put a Mahle KL96 in mine. Costs around $50. One tip I remember on the replacement is that you don't actually need to remove the giant panel under the car, just remove it at the front where the filter is, and pivot it down.

There are some online references to needing new Dorman 800-027 clips for the fuel line connections at the filter, so I bought some of those. Not needed on my truck. Must be for other models. I did use new hose clamps and a new segment of vacuum hose.

All of this work is pretty easy.

I have a seven month old and my other car is a 96 ranger and it's not legal to have a rear facing child seat in a front seat with a side airbag even disabled in my state. I was under the gun and went to the parts warehouse local to me and bought the whole assembly. $170. But it's done and my wife doesn't have to take leave from work and we dont have carousel cars now. I'm ok with this....and I'm returning the $95 fuel filter and ordering one online for cheaper. It probably needs done. Oh and the harbor freight fuel pressure kit sucks haha. After I swapped the pump and had it running it was showing no pressure. It was the adapter itself I had it cranked all the way down and nothing. I wanted to tent a kit from O'Reilly's but theirs was broken and warranty exchange. Go figure. Anyone have a good fuel system test kit that actually works?
