Pad and Rotor Replacement Question

Doing a brake job on my X for the first time in 10 years. Rotors are toast they have lost some of the silver plating around the outer edge. Pads look to still have some meat on the bone. I had planned on replacing with new Akebono pads. Do / should I really need to do that or should I save them for down the road?

If I can continue to use the existing pads do I still need to remove them to retract the Piston or is there some trick to doing that with them still on?

Also I can't remember how do you remove the retaining spring just pry it off with a flathead screw driver?

Thanks guys!

I use some anti squeak behind the brake pads. I bought a new little tool that pushes the piston in it works nicely. You could make your own with a piece of wood T nut and a bolt. You also don't need it you can just push and pry with whatever

Don't forget to get sensors for the brake pads if your sensors are tripped

I bought some premium rotors for my rears that are powder coat Grey. Very happy not to have rust inside my wheel anymore

I use the old pad - the one without the spring clip that fits into the piston - and a large c-clamp to push the piston back. Watch your MC fluid level when retracting the piston.

As others have said, new rotors + new pads. Don't install used pads onto new rotors.

Here's my DIY
