4.4i engine swap 2006

Ok so long story short, my 4.4i x5 had been using a little oil, doing the whole puff of smoke after idling for a while deal but I had been keeping up with the oil level in it without issues. I let me mother in law borrow it and a couple weeks later i end up with a knocking engine and oil all over the ground.. :dunno:

Two months later I am ready to swap in a take out engine that I got that has 94K on it (mine only has 86k[emoji57]). What all should I do before swapping it in? What seals? Im guessing valve covers up but is there something im missing? Just looking for a little advice from you all so I don't miss something. [emoji106]

I know people in the car recycling business. They can pretty much find any part you are looking for.

Being an '06, it has the N62 engine, correct? Those are supposed to suffer from valve stem seal issues, but is rectified by just installing better aftermarket ones. Or so I've read...

If you have another engine out, I'd install the better stem seals, and basically al other seals and gaskets except for the head gaskets, unless they have some known issues. It will be a good opportunity to do the timing chains and guides as well. I know they don't have as many issues as the M62TUs, but you may as well as long as it's out and everything is very accessible.

Thanks for the reply! I believe it’s the N62, so i guess i will be looking at the valve seals as well! Thanks!!

You can just have the valve stem seals replaced. No need to swap the whole engine for that!

Will the engine still be ok? Its been smoking since I inhereted the car. (Still runs awesome most of the time) Indy bmw shops around here want 6k for the job. My cats seem to be on the way out aswell but since we don't do aircare here anymore, I was planning on cutting them out.
